Tennesee freshman Jauan Jennings moving from QB to WR

Tennessee head coach Butch Jones announced prior to the start of fall camp that freshman quarterback Jauan Jennings would be making the transition to wide receiver this upcoming season.

Fantasy Spin:

This looks more like insurance than anything. With the status of receivers Von Pearson and freshman Preston Williams up in the air, depth was needed and Jennings should provide that. It is unlikely, though, that he cracks the regular rotation.

Mississippi State RB Ashton Shumpert securing No. 1 role early on

Early reports out of Starkville have Mississippi State junior RB Ashton Shumpert ahead of the pack in the competition to replace Josh Robinson.

Fantasy Spin:

CFG has had Shumpert as the projected starter for the Bulldogs all offseason, and this prediction seems to be looking good based upon the early notes from MSU beat writers to start camp. Redshirt freshman Aeris Williams and Dontavian Lee were the stars of the spring, but the veteran back does not seem to be going down without a fight.

All three backs will likely get time, especially early on in the year, but expect the trusted veteran Shumpert to gain more of the workload once SEC play comes around.

Temple WR Robbie Anderson eligible to play for the Owls in 2015

Temple head coach Matt Rhule announced that senior WR Robbie Anderson would be eligible for the 2015 season after missing last year due to academics.

Fantasy Spin:

Big news here for Temple getting Anderson back as he led the Owls in receiving back in 2013 with 791 yards and nine touchdowns. With options limited at the position, Anderson is likely to assume his starting role as the team's top receiver.

Starting QB P.J. Walker will also likely get a bump here with the return of his top wideout. Fantastic towards the end of 2013, Walker's numbers took a dip last year - much of that attributed to the loss of Anderson and no proven options on the outside.

Pittsburgh WR Tyler Boyd to be suspended for Week 1 against Youngstown State

Pittsburgh star WR Tyler Boyd will be suspended for the Week 1 matchup against Youngstown State according to head coach Pat Narduzzi. This news comes following a DUI charge earlier this offseason.

Fantasy Spin:

The Boyd suspension is big on multiple levels. With Boyd out of the lineup, Dontez Ford is the likely candidate to take over the No. 1 slot at WR. James Conner will also see an increased workload with the best receiving threat now out of the lineup. He will be highly-priced in DFS if this matchup is available.

For a sneaky play, watch out for backup RB Chris James. We fully expect Pittsburgh to keep it on the ground for much of the game, and it is unlikely that Conner plays the entire way through. James could get a good chunk of the carries and won't have a high salary.

For season-long leagues, do not shy away from selecting Boyd. He is only expected to miss one game.

Texas HC Charlie Strong suggests big year for RB Johnathan Gray

Per the Dallas Morning News, Texas head coach Charlie Strong is really talking up his running back Johnathan Gray.  From the article:

“Now with him being the guy, you expect big things for him. And I told him that,” Strong said. “We have backups, but we'd like to see J. Gray go out and just have a big year.”

Strong even suggested that the 215-pound Gray could see upwards of 30 carries while also cautioning that he doesn’t want him taking unnecessary hits.

Fantasy Spin:

That "upwards of 30 carries" comment sure caught our attention.  Texas hasn't produced fantasy gold in a long, long time.  While I wouldn't want to reply on him as my fantasy bell cow, Gray is more than worthy of a roster spot.

UCLA's Jim Mora would rather use just one QB

UCLA head coach Jim Mora doesn't anticipate using multiple quarterbacks this season.  His quote from Pac-12 media day:

“I’d rather use one. I think that is the most beneficial way to build your team and consistency is to use one.  But we’ll see. My gut instinct is to name a guy and support the hell out of him. That’s what I’ve tried to do.”

Fantasy Spin:

The QB race is down to Jerry Neuheisel, Josh Rosen and Mike Fafaul.  Rosen is the hot shot freshman will all the hype.  Will Mora throw Rosen right into the fire this fall?

“He hasn’t taken a snap at this level. So I don’t want to put too many expectations. I’ll let others put expectations on them. I think if Josh reaches his potential every day at the end of his time at UCLA we’ll look back and say he was a success.”

Florida QB Will Grier has bulked up to 215 lbs

Florida redshirt freshman QB Will Grier reportedly now weighs 215 pounds, which is 15 pounds more than his playing weight a year ago.

Fantasy Spin:

Grier is the front-runner to win the starting QB job over Treon Harris.  He's more of a pocket passer than Harris, which is better suited for new head coach Jim McElwain's scheme.  The Gators open camp on Thursday.

Storm Barrs-Woods could see 20-25 carries per game

Per ESPN's Oregon State head coach Gary Andersen said RB Storm Barrs-Woods would see 20-to-25 carries per game.

Fantasy Spin:

In case you missed it, Storm Woods changed him last name to Barrs-Woods this offseason out of respect for his mother.  Storm has been on the cusp of fantasy relevance over the years, but never really made the leap.  This could be his year.  Coach Anderson has a nice track record of producing fantasy talent.

Report: Indiana WR J-Shun Harris tears ACL, will redshirt

Indiana WR J-Shun Harris will miss the 2015 season with a torn ACL.  The injury occured during the first week of summer training, and will require surgery.

Fantasy Spin:

Harris was a promising rising sophomore WR and was also expected to handle the Hoosiers' kick return duties.

Harris's absence opens the door for JUCO transfer Camion Patrick and UAB transfer Marqui Hawkins to see more targets in the offense.

4-star RB Jordan Stevenson, denied by Wisconsin, lands at Nebraska

Jordan Stevenson, a 4-star running back recruit out of Dallas South Oak Cliff High School, has decided to attend Nebraska after being denied admission to Wisconsin.

Fantasy Spin:

Stevenson is eligible to play this fall.  With Ameer Abdullah off to the NFL, there may be an opportunity for Stevenson to fight for some playing time this fall with Terrell Newby, Imani Cross, Adam Taylor and Mikale Wilbon.

Consider him a player to watch at this point.

QB Daxx Garman is eligible immediately for Maryland

Oklahoma State transfer QB Daxx Garman received a waiver from the NCAA and is eligible to play this season for Maryland.

Fantasy Spin:

Garman figures to battle senior Caleb Rowe for the starting job.  Rowe was umimpressive last season before suffering a knee injury that forced him to miss 7 games and spring practice.

Vernon Adams set to join Oregon camp on August 13

Heralded Eastern Washington QB transfer Vernon Adams plans to join Oregon's camp on August 13.  The Ducks open camp on August 10, so Adams will have his work cut out for him if he is to supplant Jeff Lockie as the starter before the opener.

Fantasy Spin:

Adams has more dual threat ability than Lockie, so from a fantasy standpoint he's the guy to root for in this QB battle.  But for now, Lockie has the upper hand.  Stay tuned.

Christian McCaffrey emerging as Stanford's go-to RB

Here's some Stanford RB news per ESPN.com:

Head coach David Shaw has indicated that a bulked-up Christian McCaffrey will be a full-time offensive centerpiece this time around, and that's excellent news for Stanford's backfield.

Fantasy Spin:

The Cardinal only averaged 159 rushing yards per game in 2014, down from 207 the year before.  Remound Wright was the team's leading rusher with a measly 601 yards.  Stanford's offense seems to click much better when they have a bell cow to carry the load.  It remains to be seen whether McCaffrey can be that guy, but so far the news is positive.  He was very productive in the team's final four games of 2014.

Note: Remound Wright does have a nose for the endzone (11 rushing TDs a year ago).  This vulture possibility could wreak havoc on McCaffrery's fantasy potential.

Helfrich: Lockie has earned the right to take QB1 snaps

Per ESPN's Kyle Bonagura's twitter account:

Mark Helfrich on quarterback Jeff Lockie:  "Jeff earned the right to take all the reps with the 1s until proven otherwise".

Fantasy Spin:

Oregon opens camp on August 10th.  With the news that Vernon Adams will join the Ducks on August 13th, Lockie seems to hold the early edge in the QB competition.

We have been high on Adams this offseason in our rankings, but have cooled off recently as more news coming out of Eugene seems to indicate that he has a steep mountain to climb.  Adams will need to prove himself quickly in August camp.

F Childress (FRES)

QB Ford Childress officially joins Fresno State

Fresno State has officially added West Virginia transfer QB Ford Childress to their roster.  He is expected to compete for the starting job with Zack Greenlee and Chason Virgil.

Fantasy Spin:

Childress was thought to be The Man in Morgantown at one point in his career.  He logged two starts before suffering an injury, and never wound up materializing.  The Fresno State passing game suffered greatly last year in the absence of QB Derek Carr and WR Devantae Adams, with the passing yards per game plummeting from 395 in 2013 to 224 last fall.
