Venric Mark transfers to West Texas A&M

Former Northwestern RB Venric Mark has transferred to West Texas A&M to be closer to his mom and ailing grandmother.

Fantasy Spin:

Mark had considered Baylor, Texas State, Houston, Texas Tech, Oklahoma State, SMU and Kansas as possible landing spots, but in the end he chose to go the Division II route.

DeVante Parker injures foot, out indefinitely

Louisville star WR DeVante Parker injured his foot in practice on Friday.  He is out indefinitely.

Parker was evaluated by the team doctors and is seeking a second medical opinion at a doctor in Charlotte.

Fantasy Spin:

Well, this news is a punch to the stomach.  Parker is one of the most talented WRs in the nation.  Let's hope the injury isn't serious.

RB Marshawn Williams looking sharp in VTech scrimmage

Virginia Tech RB Marshawn Williams ran for 54 yards in Friday's scrimmage, and could be putting pressure on Trey Edmunds at the top of the depth chart.  Williams had missed time earlier in fall camp after having hernia surgery.

Fantasy Spin:

We wouldn't be surprised if Williams became the starter at some point this season.  Edmunds has not exactly taken the bull by the horns in fall camp, leaving the door slightly opened for someone - maybe Williams.

NCAA denies Dorial Green-Beckham's appeal

The NCAA denied Dorial Green-Beckham's appeal to play football for Oklahoma this fall.  He will have to wait until 2015 to take the field.

Fantasy Spin:

Nobody should be shocked by this one.  The NCAA actually got one right.

Other than Sterling Shepard, the Sooners are very green at the wide receiver position.  DGB would have been a welcome addition if the NCAA had ruled differently.

Updated Texas Tech depth chart

Our pal Don Williams from the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal has the latest Texas Tech depth chart.  See link for all of the details.  The WR spot is the most interesting piece to monitor:

The depth chart:
Split end, D.J. Polite-Bray, So.; Devin Lauderdale, So.
Inside receiver (H), Jakeem Grant, Jr.; Jordan Davis, Sr.
Inside receiver (Y), Bradley Marquez, Sr.; Jordan Davis, Sr.
Flanker: Reginald Davis, So.; Dylan Cantrell, So.

Fantasy Spin:

Grant is everyone's favorite Red Raider fantasy receiver this preseason, but who will become their true WR2?

M Cox (APPS)

App State RB could play despite knee injury

Appalachian State RB Marcus Cox could play in the season opener vs. Michigan despite dealing with a knee injury.  He underwent surgery on the knee last week, but the team is saying it was "minor".

Fantasy Spin:

No surgery is minor.  It requires some recovery time.  As a fantasy manager, we think App State would be smart to give Cox a rest until he is closer to 100 percent.  However, it sounds like he is going to give it a go.

If he is a no go, the Mountaineers actually have a nice RB2 option in Terrance Upshaw.

Toe injury hampers USC RB

USC RB Tre Madden is dealing with a toe injury that could keep him out of the season opener vs. Fresno State.  Justin Davis has been seeing more touches in his absence.

Javorius Allen is still considered the No. 1 RB option for the Trojans.

Fantasy Spin:

If Madden is a no go vs. Fresno State, Justin Davis becomes a super sneaky play in Daily fantasy leagues.

Braxton Miller's surgery set for Tuesday

Ohio State QB Braxton Miller is slate for surgery for his partially torn labrum next Tuesday.  He is expected to be out for 9-12 months.

Fantasy Spin:

Miller is a tough call for those in dynasty leagues wondering whether or not to keep him for 2015.

N Burcham (SMU)

SMU names their starting QB

SMU has named Neal Burcham their starting QB.  Burcham held off Texas A&M transfer Matt Davis for the gig.

Fantasy Spin:

While SMU's offense has quieted down over the past few years, hey, it's still a June Jones aerial attack.  The potential is always there.  SMU should pass the ball often, making Burcham a decent fantasy consideration in deeper leagues.

Spurrier changing his tune on Davis injury?

Earlier this week, South Carolina ball coach Steve Spurrier hinted that Mike Davis might miss the opener vs.  Texas A&M.

Now, he's singing a different tune.  Per The State:

“Mike Davis has sort of been banged-up this preseason,” Spurrier said according to The State. “He’s missed several days of practice, sort of got a bruise in the back or something. He hasn’t practiced but a little bit today, all this week. So Brandon Wilds has been running well, David Williams has been hurt, Shon Carson and Brandon Wilds have been everyday guys all preseason.

“So anyway, Mike’s a heck of a back, but these other guys have actually done a little better than him because Mike’s been hurt a little bit. So we’re going to play our backs, and Mike's going to be in there."

Fantasy Spin:

Steve Spurrier loves to mess with the media, so it's hard to say exactly what is going on here.  Let's monitor the practice reports next week, and then we'll determine Davis's fantasy value for the A&M game.

B Mayfield (OKLA)

QB Baker Mayfield closer to becoming a Sooner

Per Jeremy Fowler of CBS, "Texas Tech is no longer blocking Oklahoma's abiltiy to give QB Baker Mayfield a scholarship".

Fantasy Spin:

Mayfield had a few nice moments in Lubbock before things went south.  If he lands on the Sooners' roster, he's a name to put on your dynasty format watchlist in the future.

B Bell (OKLA)
T Knight (OKLA)
C Thomas (OKLA)

TE Blake Bell is taking 2nd Team QB snaps

QB-turned-TE Blake Bell is back under center for the Sooners.  Kind of.

Bell has been taking QB reps with the 2nd team while Cody Thomas is out with an injury.

Fantasy Spin:

So what does this mean from a fantasy perspective?  Hard to say.

It has been reported that once Thomas returns to the practice field, Bell will return exclusively to his TE position.

Is the door opened for some Belldozer packages down by the goal line?  There's always that possibility, which makes Bell an intriguing sleeper TE.

If Trevor Knight goes down to injury, is it possible that Bell could go back to the QB position full-time?  Yes, that is possible, but he might be the QB2 to Thomas in that scenario.

Lots of questions here.  Consider Bell as a stash-away TE who could pay off big dividends as the season rolls on.

Expanded role for Cal RB?

Cal head coach Sonny Dykes said he hopes to expand the role of RB Khalfani Muhhammad this fall.  Muhhammad rushed for 445-4 as a freshman last fall in limited duty.  He also contributed with 14-187-1 receiving.

Fantasy Spin:

Cal has a track record of producing great fantasy backs, but those were under previous coaching regimes.  Consider Muhhammad a sleeper at this time.

Z Terrell (WMIC)

Zach Terrell wins Western Michigan QB job

Western Michigan has named redshirt sophomore Zach Terrell the team's starting QB.

Fantasy Spin:

The Broncos have been fantasy friendly in the past, but the cupboard seems to be a bit bare in 2014.

Terrell got his feet wet last year, passing for 1,602 and 8 TDs after starting the final six games of the year.  He's not a rushing threat, so he'll need to vastly improve upon those numbers before he gets on the fantasy radar.

P Robinette (VAND)
S Rivers (VAND)

Vanderbilt announces their starting QB for season opener

Patton Robinette had been named the starting QB for Vanderbilt when they square off against Temple in the season opener.  He beat out Stephen Rivers for the job.

Fantasy Spin:

Not a huge surprise here.

We have no expectations for Robinette as Vandy heads into the post-James Franklin era.  He's only worthy of fantasy consideration in SEC-heavy formats, or those of you geeks in the deepest of leagues.
