Vanderbilt to start Johnny McCrary at QB vs. Western Kentucky

Vanderbilt announced sophomore Johnny McCrary will start at QB in the matchup against Western Kentucky

Fantasy Spin:

McCrary has been in a battle with fellow sophomore Wade Freebeck, but was considered the favorite all offseason. Vanderbilt will put up some points against Western Kentucky, so McCrary is a sneaky play tonight.

T Brown (ECAR)

East Carolina WR Trevon Brown suspended first three games

East Carolina announced today that wide receiver Trevon Brown will be suspended for a violation of the student code until Sept. 20th. That winds up being the first three games of the season.

Fantasy Spin:

There was some hype surrounding Brown this offseason due to his explosiveness last season when he stepped in for Cam Worthy in spot duty. Now, who will step up with Brown out?

Jimmy Williams and Brandon Bishop are listed as the WR3 and WR4 respectively behind starters Isaiah Jones and Davon Grayson.

The question then becomes how effective will the offense be under new starting QB Blake Kemp. That is the big unknown at this point.

San Jose State to play both quarterbacks in opener

San Jose head coach Ron Caragher announced earlier this week that both Joe Gray and Kenny Potter will get reps at quarterback in the opener against New Hampshire.

Fantasy Spin:

San Jose rotated quarterbacks constantly in 2014 and that showed in their record. Never good to have a rotating door and Caragher likely knows that headed into this year. Steer clear of this until one separates himself from the other.

Bowling Green wide receiver Ronnie Moore to sit out first half against Tennessee

Bowling Green starting wide receiver Ronnie Moore will have to sit out the first half against Tennessee due to NCAA rules for his ejection in the team's bowl game last year.

Fantasy Spin:

Moore in an integral part of the BG offense, used in the passing game and as the primary wildcat quarterback.

This shouldn't really increase reps for Gehrig Dieter, Roger Lewis and Ryan Burbrink, but look for the backups to see more playing time - specifically Robbie Rhodes and Teo Redding.

Boise State RB competition in full display Friday night?

Here's an update on the Boise State RB situation per the IdahoStateman:

The Boise State football team’s tailback situation likely will be more a series of auditions than a rotation Friday night against Washington.

Coaches have said three players will contribute: sophomore Jeremy McNichols, the starter; senior Kelsey Young, the Stanford transfer; and junior Devan Demas, the team’s fastest player. But they won’t be shuttling in and out of the game except for plays that require specific personnel.

“If we stick a guy in there, we plan on him staying in there for a while,” running backs coach Lee Marks said. “... It’s interesting to see who takes advantage of their opportunity when they get in there, who’s hot.”

Fantasy Spin:

The bottom line here is that no one player is going to replace the ultra-productive Jay Ajayi.  It will be a combination of the trio mentioned above.  The hope is that one of them -- likely McNichol -- sees a big enough percentage of the workload to make him fantasy viable on a week to week basis.  Friday night will be very telling.  Watch closely.

Stanford lifts suspension of WR Michael Rector

Stanford has lifted the suspension of WR Michael Rector and he is expected to play in the season opener vs. Northwestern.

Fantasy Spin:

Rector is a big play threat who can stretch the defense.  His presence will help open things up for the rest of the team's playmakers.

Could Idaho play two QBs in opener? Or is it just 'coach speak'?

Per the Moscow-Pullman Daily News, Idaho head coach Paul Petrino confirmed that Matt Linehan will start at quarterback, but also stated that backup Jake Luton may see the field as well, depending on how the game goes.

“There are a couple of different circumstances (in which Luton could play) but I’m just going to keep that to myself right now,” he said.

Fantasy Spin:

Hmmmm.... we don't want to read too much into this as it might just be 'coach speak'.  However, Linehan is a popular DFS option this week, so we dug a little deeper to learn more about this redshirt freshman Luton.

We watched a 3-minute highlight tape of Luton in high school (http://www.hudl.com/athlete/665773/highlights/54277375/v2).  In the video, he only ran it twice on read option plays.  The rest of the highlights were passes.  He is 6'6 and 220 pounds, but does possess quick feet and decent mobility.  He reportedly did run for 450 yards his senior year.

There is probably nothing to worry about here, Linehan fans, but something to keep an eye on moving forward.

Collins or McMaryion?: Oregon State QB starter still a mystery

The Oregon State coaching staff is remaining mum on who will get the start at quarterback in the season opener vs. Weber State -- Seth Collins or Marcus McMaryion.  No matter who takes the first snap, both QBs are expected to see their fair share of snaps in Week 1.

Fantasy Spin:

The hope here is that Collins eventually wins this battle.  His highlight reel from the spring was tantalizing, and his dual threat capabilties ooze of fantasy potential.

ICYMI: Cardale Jones rushed to hospital with migraine, is reportedly fine

Ohio State quarterback Cardale Jones was rushed to a hospital Wednesday night afer experiencing severe head pain.  Reportedly, he was not admitted to the hospital, and is now resting and doing fine.

Fantasy Spin:

No word yet on whether or not this will affect his status for the season opener.  Since the game is on Monday, he probably has plenty of time to recooperate and be ready to roll.  Stay tuned.

T Harris (FLOR)
W Grier (FLOR)

Florida will start QB Treon Harris in opener

Florida head coach Jim McElwain announced Wednesday that sophomore quarterback Treon Harris will start the season opener against New Mexico State.

Fantasy Spin:

Things were treading upward in the way of Will Grier until this news hit today. Grier was seemingly the better fit for the offense that McElwain wants to install, but Harris has been more consistent in practice.

Steer very, very clear of this situation now as McElwain also announced that Grier will play as well. Not like you were going to play a Florida quarterback anyways....

R Higgins (CSU)

Rashard Higgins said to be full go after hamstring issue

Colorado State WR Rashard Higgins reportedly dealt with a hamstring issue in preseason camp, but he is said to be fully cleared for Week 1.

Fantasy Spin:

It doesn't sound like this injury will hamper him in Week 1.  The real question is whether or not new head coach Mike Bobo's offensive scheme will hamper Higgins' ability to remain an elite fantasy option.

T Hill (OKST)

Former Okla. St. RB/WR Tyreek Hill lands at West Alabama

Former Oklahoma State RB/WR Tyreek Hill has enrolled at Division II West Alabama.  The Cowboys dismissed Hill following a domestic violence charge in December.  At one point, it appeared Hill was going to Akron, but that didn't pan out.

Fantasy Spin:

Those of you hanging onto Hill in deep keeper leagues can cut him loose.

L Falk (WAZZ)

Mike Leach names Luke Falk his opening day starter

Washington State head coach Mike Leach announced that Luke Falk will start at quarterback vs. Portland State.

Fantasy Spin:

No surprises here.  Still, Falk owners can breathe a sign of relief that Leach didn't throw one of his curveballs.

Auburn names Roc Thomas starting RB for opener

Auburn has named Roc Thomas as their starting RB for the opener against Louisville.  Peyton Barber and Jovon Robinson are both listed as RB2's.  Head coach Gus Malzahn said that all three backs will see action in the opener, and that the battle for the starting job will continue until the team's SEC opener vs. LSU in two weeks.

Fantasy Spin:

Malzahn usually settles on one guy.  Let's hope Thomas grabs the bull by the horns here and locks down the job.  The last thing we want to see is RBBC.

J Ertz (KANS)
A Delton (KANS)
J Hubener (KANS)

Kansas State names Jesse Ertz as starting quarterback

According to Kansas State head coach Bill Synder, sophomore Jesse Ertz won the starting quarterback job in fall camp and will start in Week 1.

Fantasy Spin:

Definitely not the guy CFG had here. We had Ertz pegged as the QB3 coming out of the spring behind Joe Hubener and freshman Alex Delton, but Ertz won the job with his consistency in fall camp according to Snyder. Something he struggled with in the spring.

Ertz definitely has the biggest arm of the three quarterbacks, but little mobility. Much different from the Collin Klein's and Jake Waters of the world. With limited receivers this year, hard to see a big impact.
