Soon after Pitt coach Dave Wannstedt indicated that the competition for the starting tailback position might not be decided until a week before the season opener, Dion Lewis gave reason to reconsider.

The 5-foot-8, 190-pound freshman rushed for a team-best 56 yards on 14 carries, including a 19-yard touchdown run, and had a team-high four receptions for 15 yards Saturday morning in the second scrimmage of spring drills at the UPMC Sports Performance Complex indoor facility.

“If we’re playing tomorrow, he’s in the mix for about 30 carries, in my mind,” Wannstedt said of Lewis, an Albany, N.Y., native who enrolled early. “He has some real maturity. Dion has come in here and, as strange as this sounds, he probably has as good a grasp offensively as any of the backs.”

CFG Analysis:

Coach Wannestedt is all over the place with his comments this spring.  Two days ago, he says the competition will last into September.  Now, Lewis is going to get 30 carries?  Take his comments with a grain of salt.
