ACC Outlook

This is one weak college fantasy football conference. There are a few good defenses worth a look, but at the sexy positions there's not much to get excited about. If there is a strength at the skill positions, it's with the running backs. The trio of CJ Spiller, Jonathan Dwyer and Darren Evans are all formidable fantasy options. At quarterbak, Russell Wilson is the lone proven commodity. Tyrod Taylor and Jacory Harris ooze of upside and could be worth a look. The ACC wide receivers leave much to be desired. When your top ranked guy at the position (Dwight Jones) has yet to catch a ball in an actual game, you know you have problems.

The Hokies are the favorite to take the Coastal Division, with Georgia Tech and Miami nipping at their heels. Look for Clemson to rebound this year and make a strong push for the Atlantic Division title.

Strength of Schedule

Our SOS numbers are completely geared towards Fantasy Football, where on the field W's and L's mean very little. In fantasy, all that matters is how many yards and TD's your player is going to rack up against his opponent. We built our SOS algorithm with this in mind.

See the "ABOUT SOS" tab for a detailed SOS guide.

Strength of Schedule GUIDE

Our Strength of Schedule numbers are geared towards Fantasy Football.
In fantasy football, wins and losses do not matter. What counts is how many yards and touchdowns your fantasy player is going to rack up against the opponent. We created our SOS numbers with this in mind.

High numbers are "good".
If your player is facing a school with a SOS of 110, it means that opponent has the 110th toughest defense in the country (out of 120 schools). They are a fantasy cupcake.

Low numbers are "bad".
An opponent with a SOS value of "1" is the toughest defense in the country.

TERMINOLOGY

Total Defense SOS - the strength of the opponent's Total Defense
Pass Defense SOS - the strength of the opponent's Passing Defense
Rush Defense SOS - the strength of the opponent's Rushing Defense
First 3 Games - the strength of the opponent's Total Defense for the opening 3 games of the season.
Playoffs - the strength of the opponents Total Defense in Weeks 11-13, when most fantasy leagues will host their playoffs.
"Average" - the average SOS of your opponents. For example, Kansas State's Total Def SOS average is 88.75. This means, that on average, KSU will face the 88th toughest defense in the country on weekly basis.

COLOR AFFILIATIONS

RED - Toughest matchup (ranked 1-10)
PINK - Unfavorable matchup (ranked 11-40)
WHITE - Middle of the road matchup (ranked 41-79)
L.GREEN - Favorable matchup (ranked 80-109)
GREEN - Easiest matchup (ranked 111-120)
YELLOW - Bye week

* All division II (FCS) schools were assigned a SOS value of 120.

SOS FORMULA

We built a complex algorithm to compile our SOS numbers. Some of the factors used in the calculation include:

2008 Yards Against
2008 Points Against
2008 S.O.S. (level of competition - not fantasy)
2008 Opponents' S.O.S.
Conference Affiliation
2009 Opponents' Number of Returning Defensive Starters
2009 Opponents' Projected Points Against
2009 Opponents' Projected Yards Against

Big East Outlook

When your conference is comprised of only eight teams, you're starting from a talent pool disadvantage right out of the gate. Compound that with the departures of fantasy studs Pat White, LeSean McCoy, Donald Brown, and Kenny Britt, and you're not exactly looking at a fantasy hotbed in 2009.

So who returns? Brian Kelly's Cincy offense has the most upside with Tony Pike and a host of talented WRs returning. USF QB Matt Grothe is back on campus for what seems like his 10th season. The 'Neers duo of Devine and Brown should post good numbers. Questions abound in the UConn and Rutgers backfield.

The Big East is down this year, and appears to be completely up for grabs. Rutgers has the schedule to keep them in the thick of the race. Cincy has the offensive firepower. Pitt, West Virginia and USF also have the ability to take home top honors.

Big 12 Outlook

The Big 12 is a fantasy goldmine. There's talent nearly everywhere you turn. If you're going to camp out in any one conference on draft day, this is the place to be. Oklahoma State - loaded. Oklahoma - loaded. Texas - loaded. Kansas - loaded. Texas Tech - re-loaded. Even Iowa State appears to be on the upswing (from a fantasy standpoint).

The only schools that have major fantasy questions are Colorado and Kansas State. Bill Snyder might need a season in Manhattan to sort things out. Colorado, on the other hand, might need more time. They were only able to muster up 16 ppg in 2008 (40 points less than the conference-leading Sooners). Ouch.

The three best teams in the conference are all in the South. Look for Texas, Oklahoma and Oklahoma State to battle it out for Big 12 supremacy.

Big Ten Outlook

As their Power Rankings suggest, the Big Ten is kind of middle of the road when it comes to fantasy talent. Shonn Greene, Javon Ringer, P.J. Hill, Kory Sheets, Tyrell Sutton and Beanie Wells all depart. John Clay, Evan Royster and Brandon Minor will do their best to carry the conference's RB flag. All of the top QBs return, but who will they throw to? The WR class appears pretty thin after Regis Benn and Eric Decker.

Ohio State and Penn State are the frontrunners in the Big Ten, but don't be surprised if Illinois winds up in Pasadena. The darkhorse is Michigan State, who seems to be a team on the rise.

Pac 10 Outlook

2009 has its fair share of fantasy value. When you look at the Pac-10 you have to start in the backfield. Running backs are strong, with 3 of the top 10 backs in the country in Jahvid Best, Jacquizz Rodgers and LeGarrette Blount. Although the Pac-10 is not known as a "tough" conference, the defenses in the league provide a more difficult strength of schedule than many of the other BCS conferences.

This could be the best year for someone other than USC to take the conference crown, with teams like Oregon and California fielding talented and experienced teams.

SEC Outlook

Take a look at the two-deep on the All-Conference Team below. It's rock solid from top to bottom. But what did you expect - this IS the SEC! It is interesting that in a league that boasts outstanding defenses, there are still a decent amount of skill position players to choose from. Tebow heads the list of top prospects, which also includes Michael Smith, Charles Scott and Dexter McCluster. There are also a couple youngsters to watch in Jarvis Giles, Trent Richardson and Bryce Brown. Can they live up to the hype?

Florida is the heavy favorite to take the East title. The question is who will survive the West? Will LSU get back to form? Can Bama repeat? Or will media darling Ole Miss take advantage of a favorable schedule and wind up in Atlanta for the SEC title game?

Independents Outlook

It's kind of hard to judge a group of three teams - especially when two are service academies, but we'll give it the ol' college try.

Notre Dame should have an improved passing game this fall with Jimmy Clausen tossing balls to Michael Floyd and Golden Tate. Armando Allen is an intriguing RB prospect in PPR leagues (remember how valuable Darius Walker was a few years ago?). Navy is in rebuild mode, but QB Ricky Dobbs should be good for a few huge rushing performances. Army doesn't appear to have much to offer the fantasy zealots this fall.

Mock Draft

* Not enough Independent players to warrant a mock draft.

C-USA Outlook

C-USA is one of the most talented conferences on the college fantasy football landscape. In fact, they rank second in our Conference Power Rankings. The "defense optional" league boasts some of the best passing offenses in the entire country. Quarterbacks and wide receivers are a plenty, but don't forget about the running backs. Andre Anderson is the No. 1 ranked RB on the Geek's 2009 Big Board.

East Carolina and Tulsa have been the conference powers, but 2009 could be the year Houston takes the conference title.

MWC Outlook

2009 should be an interesting year in the Mountain West Conference. There has been change all across the conference, and things appear to be wide open. Top tier talent is thinner than last year, but there are a number a draftable players in 2009.

The BYU triplets of Hall, Unga, and Pitta dominate the college fantasy football rankings, but don't sleep on UNLV. The Rebels have some great returning pieces back in Omar Clayton, Ryan Wolfe, and Phillip Payne. With all the offensive talent, the one thing that can't be overlooked in the conference is the defensive strength of the conference.

TCU looks to be a favorite to take the conference crown in 2009, but BYU and UNLV should give the Horned Frogs a run for their money.

MAC Outlook

The MAC has been a hotbed of QB for years, and 2009 looks to be more of the same. Dan LeFevour, Tim Hiller, and Tyler Sheehan will be popular draft day selections. The MAC is one of the mid major conferences that produces large offensive numbers year-in and year-out, thanks to sub-par defenses. There were many coaching changes leading into the 2009 season that could shake things up a bit.

Who will come out on top in 2009? Central Michigan appears to be the preseason favorite, but don't be surprised to see Western Michigan make a strong title run.

WAC Outlook

The WAC Conference has two of the best quarterbacks in the country. Colin Kaepernick will be a top 5 QB in 2009, and Kellen Moore is poised to explode in his second year under center. Outside of Louisiana Tech's Daniel Porter, the running back situations appear to be headed the way of the dreaded RBBC monster. If you can't land one of the top quarterbacks, then look for some good middle tier wide receivers.

There should be a good a fierce battle for the conference title between Boise State, Nevada, and maybe Hawaii. This will be one exciting conference to watch in 2009.

Sun Belt Outlook

The Sunbelt Conference may be one of the best destinations for fantasy players in the middle to late rounds of the 2009 draft. There is plenty of talent, with the running backs having a slight edge on the quarterbacks this year. There is some great top end talent at wide receiver, where T.Y. Hilton and Jerrel Jernigan should fly off the board in the early rounds.

Troy should be able to claim the conference championship again in 2009, but rising power Middle Tennessee could have something to say about that.
