Judging the 2005 QB Recruiting Class

By Todd DeVries - January 27, 2009

Top ‘05 recruit Ryan Perrilloux didn’t pan out.

With college football’s LOI (Letter Of Intent) Day one week away, the recruiting machine is alive and well and running on all cylinders.  In a future article, we’ll break down the incoming freshman who could make a fantasy splash next fall.

In the meantime, we stumbled across an interesting article from SI.com’s Stewart Mandel where he takes a look back at the top quarterbacks in the 2005 recruiting class.  The results of his analysis prove what we already know:  recruiting is not an exact science.

We just thought this would be some food for thought before letting yourself get swept away in the upcoming LOI madness.

2008 Season Recap - The Geek Awards

TE James Casey, Rice
What?  A tight end for MVP?  Well, if you are a believer in Value Based Drafting, this one is a no-brainer.  In most scoring systems, Casey outscored the #2 fantasy tight end by over 100 points, and the #10 TE by nearly 200 pts.  He scored more fantasy points than any RB or WR in the country.  If you had Casey in a league requiring a Tight End, you probably faired very well.

2008 Top Fantasy Scorers - Returning Players Only

Colt McCoy will return in 2009 to torment B12 defenses.

by The Dawgfather

With a new year comes a new fantasy football draft to prepare for. The Dawgfather wants to help all of you avoid some of the pitfalls that even the great ones like myself can find ourselves in. So much time passes from the end of the season to the next draft, that we tend to forget about how a guy played. Summer hype about a player becomes our obsession and it can lead to dangerous draft result. The Dawgfather even fell prey to the Ryan McCants hype. So to help avoid this problem I have made a board of the top returning underclassmen players at QB, RB, WR, and TE.

Bowl Season Recap - Ranking the Bowl Games

The Geek is fortunate to have a wife that allowed him to chain himself to the couch for 32 of the 34 bowl games this holiday season.  Some games, like the Holiday Bowl (picure, Jamd) had him glued to the television screen while others (Sun Bowl) had him dozing off.

Just for kicks, we incorporated a Caddyshack theme to our rankings.  See after the jump…

They’re Outta Here - The NFL Early Entries

By Todd DeVries - January 20, 2009

The National Football League has announced the names of 46 players who have been granted special eligibility for the 2009 NFL Draft. Each of the 46 players has met the league’s three-year eligibility rule and each has submitted a written application in which he renounced his remaining college football eligibility.

There are more than a few players here that will leave gaping holes in the college fantasy landscape, including Pitt’s star RB LeSean McCoy (pictured, Damian Strohmeyer/SI).

Tracking the Head Coaching Carousel

By our count, there have been twenty-one head coaching changes in major college footbal for 2009.  When your fantasy draft rolls around next August, you’ll need to be mindful of how these new coaches could change the offensive mindset of their new team.

One coach to keep an eye on is Kansas State’s Bill Snyder.  He was the architect of one of the most successful rebuilding projects in collegiate history.  Snyder produced fantasy star quarterbacks such as Michael Bishop and Ell Roberson.  With Josh Freeman off to the NFL, it will be interesting to see who Snyder tabs as his signal caller in Manhattan.

A Final Look Back at The Geek’s 2008 Predictions

By Todd DeVries - January 15, 2009

Carnac

Before we close the book on 2008, let’s take a quick look back at The Geek’s 10 Bold (Preseason) Predictions.  Overall, the results are mixed.  We nailed our “most overhyped” teams, but really missed the mark on our Ohio State and Michigan prognostications.

#10.  Notre Dame will win 8 games.
...and the media will be fawning all over Charlie once again.  “What an amazing turnaround!”.  It’s going to be enough to make you throw up in your mouth.

Verdict:  Off by one game.  After starting out 4-1, ND limped to the finish line with a final record of 7-6.  It’s certainly better than their three win 2007 season, but it didn’t really qualify as an “amazing turnaround”.

The season is over and a deep depression is setting in for college football diehards.  Before closing the books on the bowls, we’re taking one final look back at the 34 games from a fantasy perspective.  Nobody had a better bowl game than Colorado State RB Gartrell Johnson.  Johnson (pictured) had a career performance against Fresno State in the New Mexico Bowl.  He rushed for 285 yards and two TD’s and caught five balls for another 90 yards.
