CFG's Joe and Kevin differ in opinion on Markus Wheaton this week.
ch
Week 6 is here, folks. Time to pull out all the stops, set up our juggernaut lineups, and notch another "W" in our belts. We're here for you with some good, old-fashioned start-sit advice.
There's some additional juice to this week's column as Kevin and Joe differ in opinion on Markus Wheaton. A little "Point-Counterpoint", if you will. When the dust settles on the Oregon State - Arizona game, who will end up being the ignorant you-know-what on this one, Kevin or Joe?
Have at it....
TODD DEVRIES
BCS Only Start:
QB Tyler Wilson, Arkansas vs. Auburn
I'm riding the hot hand here. Wilson ripped apart Texas A&M last week to the tune of 510 yards. While the Auburn defense looked good last week in shutting down South Carolina, I think they'll have their hands full this week. Wilson is a much smarter QB than knucklehead Stephen Garcia.
RB Joseph Randle, Oklahoma State vs. Kansas
Randle is coming off a poor effort against Texas A&M, and had a bye week to stew over it. Kansas has given up the ninth most points to fantasy RBs this season.
WR Dwight Jones, North Carolina vs. Louisville
Because of all the Expert Advice questions we've been getting doubting Jones, I felt the need to give him some love here this week. I'm not sure why people haven't jumped on the Jones train yet, all he's done is put up 29, 23, 18, 13 and 24 fantasy points on the year. At home against Louisville, he seems like a good bet once again.
Non BCS Start:
QB Corey Robinson, Troy vs. UL-Lafayette
In his last three games, Robinson's thrown for 373, 348 and 349 yards. He failed to throw a TD pass last week. That won't happen two weeks in a row. ULL gave up 3 TD passes to some dude named Graham Wilbert (FAU). Robinson will provide a much stiffer test.
RB Mike Ball, Nevada vs. UNLV
We've been waiting for Nevada to have "one of those Nevada games" where they rack up big points. This could be it. Amazingly, this is their HOME OPENER as they spent the month of September on the road. Look for Ball to put up Vai Taua-like numbers in this one.
WR Patrick Edwards, Houston vs. East Carolina
Many are down on Edwards after his inconsistent start to the season, and rightly so. There's no excuse for mailing in two bad weeks in five games, not with the expectations being so high. But I'm all in on Edwards this week in what should be one of the more entertaining C-USA firework shows of the year.
BCS Only Sit:
QB James Vandenberg, Iowa vs. Penn State
Vandenberg has gotten off to a torrid start to the season (24, 18, 31, and 30 fantasy points), but the Nittany Lions will hold him in check on Saturday. I doubt he reaches the 20 point plateau in what should be a defensive struggle.
RB Spencer Ware, LSU vs. Florida
We were starting to sour on Ware after Michael Ford began eating into his carries. Then last week Ware suffered a hamstring injury early on and did not return. Alfred Blue looked pretty solid as LSU's RB3 in his absence. QB Jordan Jefferson has returned to the squad and is vulturing some of the goal line carries. Is there anything positive to hang your hat on here?
WR Aaron Pflugrad, Arizona State vs. Utah
The dude with the hot sister has been ice cold of late, scoring 6 and 5 fantasy points in last two outings. Keep him at the end of your bench until he warms up again.
Non BCS Sit:
QB Derek Carr, Fresno State vs. Boise State
Boise State has given up 15, 12, 5 and 7 fantasy points to opposing QBs this season. End of story.
RB Paris Cotton, Central Michigan vs. NC State
As I mentioned on CFG TV this week, I'm not buying Cotton stock this week. He was a flash in the pan last year, and last week's explosion could be another tease. Many fantasy geeks grabbed Cotton last week, and he might help out in some future MAC contests, but don't start him this week against NC State.
WR Tyler Shoemaker, Boise State vs. Fresno State
It's endzone or no zone for Mr. Shoemaker. He only has 13 receptions on the year, but 6 of them are for scores. The return of fellow receiver Geraldo Boldewijn into the passing game mix makes Shoemaker a dicey play this week.
KEVIN MOUNT
BCS Only Start:
QB: Seth Doege Texas Tech vs. Texas A&M: Doege has put up great numbers this season and is averaging 328 yards per game passing to go along with 14 touchdowns. He faces the worst pass defense in the country in Texas A&M, giving up over 330 yards per game. It seems very likely that Doege will tear apart the A&M defense and is a good bet to go over 300 yards once again. Look for a huge game from Doege this week.
RB: Vick Ballard Mississippi State vs. UAB: Ballard and the entire Miss State offense have struggled recently, but that could all come to an end this week versus UAB. The Blazers are pathetic against the run, giving up almost 230 yards per game. This looks like a great week for the Bulldogs to pound the football and get their running game back on track. A 100-yard day and two or three scores seem highly probably for Ballard this week.
WR: Markus Wheaton Oregon State vs. Arizona: Wheaton has been the main weapon for Oregon State and has a juicy match up this week against Arizona. The Wildcats have been atrocious against the pass and are allowing almost 300 yards per game. Expect a lot of throwing from Oregon State in this one and a bunch of work for Wheaton. He could find the end zone once or twice this week as well.
Non BCS Start:
QB: Alex Carder Western Michigan vs. Bowling Green: Carder and the Western Michigan passing game are red hot after torching Uconn for 479 yards and five touchdowns. They could remain on fire against Bowling Green in a potentially high scoring MAC affair. Look for Carder to post #1 type quarterback numbers this week.
RB: Bobby Rainey Western Kentucky vs. Middle Tennessee State: Rainey has been a productive fantasy player this season, but not nearly what fantasy owners had hoped. He may rectify that and explode all over a Middle Tennessee rush defense that ranks 112th in the nation. This could be the week that Rainey puts up those monster rushing totals that fantasy owners all over the country have been expecting.
WR: Chleb Ravenell Western Michigan vs. Bowling Green: Ravenell has established himself as the second option in the potent Western Michigan passing game over the past two weeks. He has 14 receptions for 195 yards and three scores over that period. Look for another big game from Ravenell against Bowling Green this week.
BCS Only Sit:
QB- Dan Persa Northwestern vs. Michigan: Persa made his return to the lineup last week against Illinois and looked decent, but was unable to finish the game. He is said to be ready to go this week against Michigan, but the situation is tenuous to say the least. Add in the fact that the Michigan ranks 14th in the country and you have a recipe for disaster. Fantasy owners might be smart to keep Persa on the bench this week and see how he looks.
RB- Rodney Stewart Colorado vs. Stanford: Stewart is coming off a nice performance against Washington State in which he ran for 132 yards and a score. Things will get much tougher for Stewart this week when he collides with a stout Stanford rush defense that only allows 62 yards per game. Stewart has a low ceiling this week and there are probably better options out there for fantasy owners.
WR- Chris Givens Wake Forest vs. Florida State: Givens has been a huge weapon for Wake Forest and a quality option at receiver for fantasy owners. He is averaging roughly seven receptions and 125 yards per game this season. It may be difficult for Givens to produce to those levels this week against a stingy Florida State pass defense which ranks 13th in the nation against the pass. Temper your expectations for Givens this Saturday.
Non BCS Sit:
QB- Casey Pachall TCU vs. San Diego State: Pachall has been very good in his first season starting for TCU and is fresh from his first 300 yard passing day. He will face a stiff test this week against the 9th ranked San Diego State pass defense. TCU may try to run the ball often this week, so the fantasy value of Pachall could be limited.
RB- Robbie Rouse Fresno State vs. Boise State: Rouse has been on fire while posting four straight 100 plus yard games in a row. He is tough to sit right now, but that might be the prudent thing to do this week when he faces Boise State. The Broncos have a tough rush defense and just shut down Nevada and their run game. Rouse may be hard pressed to find his fifth straight 100-yard game this week.
WR- Josh Boyce TCU vs. San Diego State: Boyce has been remarkably consistent this season, scoring in four of his five games and averaging almost 100 yards receiving per contest. He may find it hard to maintain his consistent performance this week versus San Diego State. The Aztecs are very good against the pass, but struggle stopping the run so look for TCU to pound the football this week.
JOE ARPASI
BCS Only Start:
QB- Tajh Boyd Clemson vs. Boston College: Boyd has become a regular starter in most fantasy line-ups. This week is being highlighted due to Boston College’s inability to play quality defense this season. Boyd should have no problems putting up big time numbers against BC in this one.
RB- Antwon Bailey Syracuse at Tulane: After sluggish performances in weeks 2 and 3, Bailey has been able to bounce back with a pair of 100+ yard – one score performances. Although they haven’t been amazing they do serve as a basis for seeing Bailey reaching a good fantasy performance against a Tulane defense that the 21st worst in the country for giving up fantasy points to opposing running backs.
WR- Jeremy Ebert Northwestern vs. Michigan: Dan Persa is back in the line-up, despite some lingering injury concerns. But there’s a very good chance he will be fine and should play. Whenever Persa plays, Ebert benefits. Ebert is Persa’s favorite target and in his first week back Persa found Ebert five times for three scores. With a potential high scoring affair possibly on the horizon, Ebert should have another multi-score game.
Non BCS Start:
QB- Blaine Gautier Louisiana Lafayette vs. Troy: Troy has the 7th worst defense in the country when it comes to fantasy points allowed to a quarterback. This alone should warrant a good fantasy match-up. Add in the fact that Troy has an offense that will put up points, and you now have the potential for a high scoring game. With tight end Ladarius Green back in the Lafayette offense, Gautier will have all his tools to deliver the ball to.
RB- Robert Turbin Utah State vs. Wyoming: Turbin has had one major bounce-back season after a long knee rehab. He will have the opportunity to shred up a poor defense this week and you can rest assured that he will do exactly that. A three touchdown performance is not out of the question in this one.
WR-Quinton Patton Louisiana Tech at Idaho: Patton has found himself as the center of the passing game for the Bulldogs. He is matched-up against a hapless Idaho defense that is sure to give plenty of yards to the Tech offense. Expect another good performance out of Patton this week.
BCS Only Sit:
QB- Zach Maynard California at Oregon: Maynard has produced some nice games in 2011. Although Cal will find themselves playing from behind and forced to throw in this one, it will not be easy for him to churn out yards. Oregon has the 45th best defense in regards to fantasy points allowed to quarterbacks, and they will be playing in the very loud confines of Autzen Stadium.
RB- Terrance Ganaway Baylor vs. Iowa State: Despite an amazing start in week one, Ganaway has tempered off a bit since. Opening week was the only time he cracked the 100 yards rushing mark. He has scored one touchdown in all but one game this year, but it’s difficult to expect him to crack 100+ yards and two scores despite the nice fantasy match-up.
WR- Markus Wheaton Oregon State vs. Arizona: Wheaton has been pretty reliable for the OSU offense this season, but there are warning signs out there. The first thing is obvious, he has yet to reach the endzone this entire season. Secondly, the return of James Rodgers will slowly eat into Wheaton’s production. The third are of concern for this week is that Arizona struggles stopping the run. This might be one of the best rushing match-ups for OSU on the season and that will keep the ball out of the passing game’s hands.
Non BCS Sit:
QB- Keith Wenning Ball State vs. Temple: Wenning has been an up and down player this season. Against tough opponents (South Florida & Oklahoma) he has barely put up 5 fantasy points. Against all other opponents he is averaging 28.11 fantasy points respectively. Although he is facing a MAC opponent, Temple is a very tough team. Just wait another week or two before thinking of plugging him into your line-up.
RB- Bryce Beall Houston East Carolina: The Houston running back situation has been a bit of a mess with three quality backs all vying for time. Hayes has been the only reliable rusher of the group, while Sims and Beall are difficult to predict their big performances. Although the match-up looks real good for this game, Beall has a better odds to let you down that give your team a needed boost.
WR- Josh Boyce TCU at San Diego State: The TCU offense has been putting up good numbers. San Diego State runs a very aggressive, attacking style defense that makes it hard to run the ball, and attacks the quarterback on passing downs. Boyce should have a decent day, but expect lower stats than normal.
