So did that feel good or what? Football is back, baby! And I'm still on an adrenaline high the morning after. Here are some random thoughts on what happened last night, from a fantasy perspective.
USC 49, Hawaii 36
Big Names
USC WR Ronald Johnson lived up to our No. 7 weekly player ranking with a 4 touchdown performance.
USC QB Matt Barkley picked apart the Rainbow Warriors for 257 yards and 5 TDs.
USC RB Marc Tyler looked good while putting up a 17-154-1 statline.
Hawaii WR Greg Salas did what he does, logging a solid 8-124-0.
Watch List
Hawaii WR Kealoha Pilares blew up for 5-176-3.
Hawaii WR Royce Pollard put up 7-106-0.
Hawaii backup QB Shane Austin came in and looked decent, going 6-9 for 141 yards and 2 TDs. If Moniz is out for any games, Austin could make an interesting fill-in. Army, Colorado and Charleston Southern are next up on the slate.
Notes
Hawaii QB Bryant Moniz and WR Rodney Bradley were both injured in this one. Moniz looked like he suffered a concussion, but we are awaiting official word. Bradley took a hit to the midsection and was spitting blood. He has had a tough road with injuries.
Ohio State 45, Marshall 7
Big Names
OSU QB Terrelle Pryor didn't do much on the ground (8-17-0) but he did throw for 245 and 3 TDs. If you invested a high draft pick on TP, he is going to have to rush for more yards to make you happy.
OSU WR DeVier Posey only caught 4 balls for 41 yards, but 2 went for scores.
Marshall RB Martin Ward, who was recently demoted for Andre Booker, won the RB battle on this night. Ward 6-32-0, Booker 8-5-0.
Watch List
OSU RB Brandon Saine put up a nice 9-103-2, but Jamal Berry (7-80-0) and Daniel Herron (7-44-0) figure to cut into Saine's time this year. At least early on.
OSU WR Dane Sanzenbacher caught a long TD pass en route to a 3-113-1 performance. He might make a nice option in deep BCS-only leagues.
Miami 45, Florida A&M 0
Big Names
Miami QB Jacory Harris was efficient (210 passing yards, 3 TDs).
Miami WR Leonard Hankerson flew under the radar in many leagues despite our Top 50 preseason WR rankings. He looked great in the early going, catching 6 balls for 115 yards and 2 scores.
Utah 27, Pitt 24
Big Names
Pitt RB Dion Lewis toted the rock 25 times for only 75 yards and 1 TD. It was a tough match up for the Panthers.
Pitt WR Jon Baldwin came on near the end of the game and wound up with 4-71-1. Seemed like Pitt resorted to just throwing too many jump balls for him. And his QB (Tino Sunseri) was less than impressive for most of the game.
Utah WR Jereme Brooks put up a solid 5-87-2 statline, doing most of his damage in the first half.
Watch List
Utah WR Devonte Christopher had a huge game (8-155-1).
Utah QB Jordan Wynn posted good numbers against a tough defense (283 passing yards, 3 TDs).
Notes
Utah RB Matt Asiata (16-65-0) outrushed Eddie Wide (9-47-0) on the evening. Wide did seem to play more of a roll in the passing game (4-24-0 vs. 1-4-0).
Wake Forest 53, Presbyterian 13
Notes
For as many points that were scored in this one, there really wasn't too much to note from a fantasy perspective. Wake spread the ball around too much.
Iowa State 27, N. Illinois 10
Big Names
NIU RB Chad Spann rushed 17 times for 80 yards. Also caught 3 balls. Not terrible, and probably an expected result given the match up. JUCO threat Jasmin Hopkins only had 5 rushes on the evening.
ISU RB Alexander Robinson had a very solid evening, compiling 129 total yards and 2 scores.
ISU QB Austen Arnaud passed for 265 yards, rushed for another 45 and added a TD on the ground.
Watch List
ISU TE Colin Franklin had a nice showing, catching 5 balls for 75 yards.
Notes
Demarcus Grady started at QB for NIU ahead of Chandler Harnish.
Indiana 51, Towson 17
Big Names
IU QB Ben Chappell passed for 182 and 2 TDs before the score got out of hand.
IU RB Darius WIllis put up a nice 14-102-2 statline.
Watch List
In Tandon Doss's absence, WR Demarlo Belcher caught 7 balls for 92 yards and a score.
Minnesota 24, Middle Tennessee 17
Watch List
Minnesota RB Duane Bennett rushed 30 times for 187 yards and no TDs.
MTSU RB Phillip Tanner posted a 8-75-1 statline.
Florida Atlantic 32, UAB 31
Big Names
UAB QB David Isabelle erupted for a school-record 214 rushing yards and 3 scores. He also passed for 79 and another TD.
FAU RB Alfred Morris put up a 16-103-1 statline.
Watch List
FAU WR Lester Jean caught 9 balls for 164 yards and 3 scores.
FAU QB Jeff Van Camp passed for 254 yards and 3 TDs.
South Carolina 41, Southern Miss 13
Big Names
USM QB Austin Davis had a rough match up and was unable to get his team into the endzone. He did go 31 of 43 for 238 yards.
USM WR DeAndre Brown was quiet until the end of this blowout where he finally caught some balls and a TD. Finished with 4-65-1.
USC WR Alson Jeffrey caught 7 balls for 106 yards.
Watch List
USC RB Marcus Lattimore looked pretty good (14-54-2). He will be the main man in the Gamecock backfield before too long, if he isn't already.
Rutgers 31, Norfolk State 0
Big Names
RU WR Mohamed Sanu caught 3 balls for 65 yards and a TD, and also rushed 4 times for 19 yards.
RU RB Joe Martinek put up a 20-109-1 statline.
Notes
Rutgers looked terrible in the first half (halftime score was 6-0). Lucky for them, the don't play a team with a pulse until week 4 vs. UNC.
Tulane 27, SE Louisiana 21
Watch List
Tulane RB Orleans Darkwa (great name!) rushed for 75 yards and 3 scores.
Ball State 27, SE Missouri 10
Big Names
BSU RB Miquale Lewis wins the "uh-oh" award for opening night. He put up 13-42-0, getting outrushed by teammates Cory Sykes (13-70-2) and Eric Williams (20-105-1).
Watch List
Looking at the play-by-play (click here) it appears that Eric Wiliams is the starter here as he got most of the carries early in the game. This is a three-headed monster with Williams leading the charge. Not good for Miquale owners.
Buffalo 31, Rhode Island 0
Watch List
Buffalo QB Jerry Davis passed for 302 yards and 4 scores.
Buffalo WR Marcus Rivers caught 10 balls for 155 yards and 1 TD.
Buffalo WR Alex Neutz caught 5 balls for 98 yards and a score.
Central Michigan 33, Hampton 0
Watch List
CMU RB Jahleel Addae led the team in rushing, putting up a 18-94-0 statline.
CMU QB Ryan Radcliff passed for 242 yards and 1 score. Also rushed for a TD (7-5-1 rushing).
Kent State 41, Murray State 10
Big Names
KSU RB Eugene Jarvis rushed for only 45 yards on 11 carries. He did get into the endzone.
Watch List
KSU QB Spencer Keith passed for 275 yards and 3 scores.
KSU WR Sam Kirkland caught 9 balls for 126 yards and 1 TD.
KSU WR Jacquise Terry put up a 4-73-2 statline.
Nevada 49, E.Washington 24
Big Names
Nevada QB Colin Kaepernick passed for 306 yards and 2 scores to go along with a 11-60-2 rushing statline. Another monster performance from the Cyborg Gazelle.
Nevada RB Vai Taua rushed for only 51 yards but did score 2 TDs.
Watch List
Nevada TE Virgil Green exploded for a 7-144-2 statline.
Notes
Nevada clearly used this game to work on their passing game. Taua was the clear starter at RB, with Mike Ball looking like the No. 2. Lampford Mark came in late and posted a 7-52-1 in garbage time.
Idaho 45, North Dakota 0
Big Names
Idaho TE Daniel Hardy posted a solid 4-82-0 statline.
Idaho QB Nathan Enderle threw for 311 yards and 2 scores.
Watch List
Idaho RB Princeton McCarty totaled 128 yards and 2 scores.
Idaho WR Armauni Johnson (one of our deep sleepers on the year) caught 3 balls for 86 yards and a TD.
