It was a wild and wooly weekend, folks. After tip-toeing through a Week 1 appetizer, we were treated to a main course of action in Week 2. We're now clearly in the college pigskin mix.
Here are some random thoughts from the week that was. Drink 'em in, they always goes down smooth...
The Kamar Jorden Blues
The question with Jorden heading into 2011 wasn't whether he would catch the ball, it was whether or not he could reach the endzone more often in 2011. It turns out that everything is in question now. After two games, Jorden has only hauled in 8 balls for 74 yards and 1 TD. That would be an average week for Jorden in 2010. It's lookin like fellow WR Eugene Cooper could be The Man this year in the Falcons' passing game. He's snagged 10 balls for 244 yards and 6 TDs so far on the year.
Let The Man Run
Let's be honest, the Michigan offense looked awful for three quarters on Saturday night. Their running backs were ineffective. Denard Robinson was inaccurate. It was a mess. Then, in the fourth quarter, it seemed as though the coaching staff scrapped the game plan and just let Shoelace improvise. It's funny how he exploded once they let him do his thing. Al Borges and Brady Hoke have a decision to make. Are they going to continue to force D-Rob to stand back there in the pocket?
Ladarius Green's Secret Injury
Fantasy owners have been pulling their hair out over the first couple weeks as the top tight end in the land has 1 totaled one freaking catch. It turns out Green injured his shoulder in the opener against Oklahoma State, and didn't suit up in Week 2. The coaching staff says he "could" play if needed this week. But do they really need him against Nicholls State? After not reporting this injury until after Week 2, it's hard to trust this coaching staff moving forward. Until Ladarius is out there on the field, it's best to keep him on your bench.
Osweiler & Pflugrad: The New Manute & Mugsy
Arizona State's 6'8 QB Brock Osweiler seems to have found his favorite target in 5'9 WR Aaron Pflugrad. The two connected 8 times for 180 yards and 2 scores Friday night versus Missouri. Did you see the chest-bump attempt between the two? Reminded me of Manute Bol and Mugsy Bogues in their Washington Bullet days.
Cotton Pickin'
Houston QB Case Keenum went for 458 and 5 TDs against North Texas on Saturday. In the second half, Cotton Turner came in and passed for 105 and 1 TD. What? No David Piland? The word out of Cougar camp was that Piland is the future, but the coaching staff is hoping to redshirt him this year. The fact that Turner finished up the game on Saturday lends credence to that theory. As long as Keenum stays healthy, we are unlikely to see Piland in 2011.
Remember Josh Jarboe?
He was the highly-touted prep star wide receiver who first landed at Oklahoma, then tried his hand at Troy. Now, Jarboe's catching passes from Ryan Aplin at Arkansas State. He posted a solid 7-162-2 line against Memphis.
Marcus Coker Rebounds
It wasn't pretty, but Coker owners who stuck with him in Week 2 were rewarded with a 35 carry, 140 yard, 2 touchdown performance. Yes, the game went to overtime so his stats were slightly inflated. But prior to the OT, he still produced a 30-119-1 statline.
Our Weekly Steele Jantz Report
Rewind a few years to the Rice offense featuring QB Chase Clement, WR Jarrett Dillard, and TE James Casey. Remember them? They put up video game like numbers in C-USA. When parts of the Owl coaching staff bolted for Iowa State, we were hoping that remnants of that high-flying offense would reappear in Ames. Quarterback Austen Arnaud had his moments over the past few years, but ultimately he was a fantasy disappointment. Now, in steps JUCO transfer Steele Jantz. We told you to keep an eye on him
last week. On Saturday against in-state rival Iowa, the guy with the porn star name racked up 279 passing yards and 4 TDs to go along with 42 yards rushing. When the match up is right, he is a solid QB2 start in most formats.
Tahj Boyd, The Passer
The word this spring was that Boyd was a dangerous running threat, but that he couldn't hit the broad side of a barn. So much for spring camp reports. The man only has 2 yards rushing through two weeks of action. Through the air, though, Boyd has passed for 525 yards and 6 TDs. Granted, those numbers came against Troy and Wofford, but still he is clearly acclimating himself to Chad Morris' new (Tulsa) passing game. The competition picks up this week with Auburn.
Red Hot Harnish
No fantasy quarterback is hotter right now than Northern Illinois' Chandler Harnish. He followed up an impressive 40 fantasy point performance in the opener with 48 in Week 2. He's got a nasty trip to Wisconsin coming up on Saturday, but after that it's smooth sailing.
Back To Pflugrad - Have You Seen His Sister?
Here's just another reason to grab the Arizona State wide receiver from the waiver wire this week. His sister, Amanda, was one of those smokin' hot Oregon Duck cheerleaders from a year or two ago (see pic).
Rocky Mountain High
WR Paul Richardson was off the hook on Saturday, catching 11 balls for a whopping 284 yards and 2 TDs in an overtime loss to Cal. He had two explosive games in 2010 as well, but was largely invisible for the remainder of the year. Can he establish any semblance of consistency this time around?
Dan Persa Who?
Northwestern's backup Kain Colter sure is making the most of his opportunity. Persa's replacement did what he was supposed to do against Eastern Illinois: dominate. He didn't put the ball in the air much (only 104 passing yards), but he did plenty of damage on the ground (109 rushing yards and 3 TDs). Dan Persa was in uniform this week, but obviously didn't play. The Wildcats have Army in Week 3, and then a bye week in Week 4. Will Persa play this week, or will the team wait until after the bye?
Hawaii Rushing Game
Through two games, Hawaii QB Bryant Moniz has produced only 2 touchdown passes, but has rushed for 4 scores. Who would've thunk it? The passing game hasn't been prolific yet, but let's take into account that the level of competition has been legitimate (Colorado and Washington). Now, the real fun begins as Moniz will face UNLV, UC-Davis and La Tech in the next three weeks. If he doesn't throw for 1,000 yards and 8 or 9 touchdowns combined in those three games, we've got a problem.
Rutgers Rushing Woes
Last week in this space we openly worried about the Scarlet Knights' offensive line. This week those worries have oficially become a major concern. Rutgers rushed 25 times for 1 yard against UNC this past weekend. Savon Huggins carried the ball 7 times for 0 yards.
Cody "Vulture" Johnson
Even though the offense struggled mightily, Texas freshman running back Malcolm Brown continued to look promising, rushing the ball 14 times for 68 yards against BYU. But around the goal line, the Horns coaching staff brought in the burly Cody Johnson to get the glory. On the season, Brown has 30 carries and 0 TDs while Johnson has 9 carries and 3 scores.
Gilbert Grape
Will Mack Brown put poor Garrett Gilbert out of his misery? This nonsense has gone far enough. The Longhorn quarterback went 2-for-8 for 8 yards before getting the hook against BYU. Case McCoy and David Ash came in and provided some spark. And the McCoy-to-Shipley (Case-to-Jaxson) combination reminded us of old times.
Dynamic Irish Duo
Despite two heart-wrenching losses, there is reason for fantasy optimism with the Fighting Irish. RB Cierre Wood and WR Michael Floyd continue to produce at a high level. Wood rushed 25 times for 134 yards and 1 TD against Michigan, while Pink Floyd caught 13 balls for 159 yards.
Week 3: Underrated Game of the Week
How about that big-time battle in the Sunshine State: FIU and UCF! FIU knocked off Louisville last week, while UCF smacked Boston College 30-3. TY Hilton and Jeffrey Godfrey provide some fantasy punch to this one.
