Hawaii
What You Need To Know
There is no quarterback controversy on the island this off-season. Greg Alexander is The Man. He didn’t really assume full starting duties in 2008 until the last part of the season, but he played well in that limited action. One of his old competitors for the job, Inoke Funaki, moved to RB.
Best Fantasy Prospect(s)
QB Greg Alexander is a solid fantasy option with big upside. While Hawaii rifled through four quarterbacks in 2008, they still managed to pass for 3,518 yards and 24 touchdowns. And that was in a “down year” as they transitioned over from the Junes Jones regime.
Sleeper Prospect
Kealoha Pilares and former QB Inoke Funaki are a couple running backs to watch this fall. But this is a passing offense, so don’t expect a traditional workhorse RB to emerge. What we are looking for is a back who rushes for about 50 yards and catches 4 or 5 passes per game.
Biggest Question Heading into August
Who will emerge as the top WR target for Alexander? The list of possible candidates is long: Aaron Bain, Malcolm Lane, Greg Salas. Jon Medeiros, Rodney Bradley, Jovonte Taylor and Dustin Blount are just a few names. Keep an eye on the depth chart in August before investing a draft pick on one of these receivers.
Spring Game Hero
Taylor caught 5 balls for 135 yards and a TD. Blount had 4 receptions for 98 yards and 2 scores. Alexander was 10-of-15 for 152 yards and a touchdown.
Injury Report
WR Jovonte Taylor is back with the team after missing school with a viral infection.
