What You Need To Know
This spring, all eyes were on Michigan transfer Ryan Mallett. The monster 6’6 255-pound quarterback takes the reigns of what appears to be a pretty dangerous offense. Star RB Michael Smith returns, along with the team’s leading pass catcher from a year ago, TE D.J. Williams.
Best Fantasy Prospect(s)
RB Michael Smith rushed for 1,072 yards and 8 TDs in just ten games last year. He is also a dangerous receiver out of the backfield (32 receptions for 298 yards and another two scores in 2008).
D.J. Williams is one of the top pass-catching tight ends in the country. He led the team in all receiving categories in 2008 with 58 catches for 699 yards and 3 TDs. With strong-armed Ryan Mallett running the offense, many are expecting Williams to have a huge year. Count us in that group. We think Williams is a Top 6-10 fantasy TE.
Sleeper Prospect
WR Joe Adams had a fantastic spring. As a freshman last year, the 6-footer from Little Rock caught 31 balls for 377 yards and one score. The coaches seem to be very high on this youngster.
De’Anthony Curtis is another player to watch. He was a highly-touted recruit in 2008 who spent most of his freshman year on the bench. However, he shot up the depth chart this spring and now finds himself in the No. 2 spot. With Michael Smith’s penchant for injuries, Curtis could see significant time this fall.
Biggest Question Heading into August
What is the health status of Michael Smith? He is supposed to be fine by August, but hamstring injuries - especially ones that require surgery - have us a bit concerned.
Spring Game Hero
Tyler Wilson, who battled Mallett for the starting QB job, was 23-of-36 for 301 yards and a couple touchdown passes. Mallett went 15-of-26 for 233 yards and two scores.
Injury Report
MIchael Smith missed spring ball as he recovered from hamstring surgery. WRs Lucas Miller and Marques Wade also missed spring ball with knee injuries.
