What You Need To Know
There’s a new head coach in town - Mike Locksley, former offensive coordinator at Illinois. Locksley fostered competition this spring and has refused to publish a depth chart or name any starters. Not very helpful for those of us in the fantasy world! What we do know is that the Lobos have lost their best fantasy option from a year ago - RB Rodney Ferguson.
Best Fantasy Prospect(s)
In 2007, QB Donovan Porterie passed for 3,006 yards and 15 touchdowns. In 2008, he tore his ACL and missed most of the season. He was hands-off this spring in scrimmage play as he continues to recover from the injury. Does Locksley’s new offense fit Porterie’s talents? That remains to be seen.
Sleeper Prospect
While the new offense likely won’t rely on the running game quite as much, they do have a pair of solid backs that can get the job done in James Wright and A.J. Butler.
Biggest Question Heading into August
Can the Lobos learn the new offense and produce a fantasy prospect in 2009? Nobody is likely to get selected on draft day, but it wouldn’t shock us if someone emerged as a fantasy waiver wire pickup during the season.
Spring Game Hero
RB A.J. Butler had 110 yards on 19 carries. Porterie completed 14 of 24 passes for 125 yards and three scores.
Injury Report
QB Donovan Porterie is still recovering from his ACL injury. He is expected to be close to 100% for fall camp. RB Terrence Brown tore his ACL in the final week of spring practice and is out for the 2009 season.
