What You Need To Know
EMU is kind of a mystery this year. They finished the year on fire offensively scoring 52 and 56 points in their final two games. QB Andy Schmitt averaged 54 completions and 500 passing yards in those two contests, while chipping in 11 total touchdowns. Big numbers.
So how does that translate into 2009? Hard to tell. Former Michigan and Louisville defensive coordinator Ron English takes over as head coach. He brings with him a defensive mindset. But how will he handle the offense? He does have some talent to work with in Schmitt, WR Jacory Stone and a host of capable running backs.
Best Fantasy Prospect(s)
Andy Schmitt is an intriguing fantasy option. As we stated above, he went bonkers in his final two games of the year. However, those two games accounted for nearly 50% of his touchdowns for the season. Will he continue his hot streak or will the new coaching regime focus more on the running game?
Jacory Stone is another player to consider. He totaled 88 receptions for 943 yards last fall (28-248 in those final two games). However, he only scored 3 TDs.
Sleeper Prospect
In most leagues, anyone from EMU would be considered a sleeper. While Schmitt and Stone are the two safest bets, the name that kept popping up in spring reports was RB Dwayne Priest. He appears to be the frontrunner for the starting job.
Biggest Question Heading into August
Will the new EMU coaching staff drastically change the offensive philosophy from a year ago? They are reportedly going to more of a pro-style offense, but will that help or hurt the fantasy prospects of QB Andy Schmitt?
