RUTGERS

What You Need To Know

Rutgers could take a big step backward in the passing game.  Quarterback Mike Teel and wide receivers Kenny Britt and Tiquan Underwood are off to the NFL.  Coach Schiano and his staff spent much of the spring looking for adequate replacements.

Best Fantasy Prospect(s)

If you’re looking for potential….RB Joe Martinek took advantage of injuries to Jourdan Brooks and Kordell Young this spring to emerge as the No. 1 back heading into fall practice.  If he can hang onto the job, he will be operating behind a veteran offensive line that could lead to a breakout year.

If you’re looking for a safer pick….veteran WR Tim Brown is the only skill player to truly lock down a position this spring.  He’s the clear No. 1 receiver in this offense.  If his QB play is respectable, he could post decent stats.

Sleeper Prospect

QB Jabu Lovelace was injured this spring.  Don Natale tops the depth chart, but he didn’t have a great camp.  So how about we roll with incoming freshman Tom Savage here?  Sure, he faces an uphill battle to see significant snaps this fall.  But he is the future.  If he can get onto campus this summer and blow away the coaching staff, he could be in the mix for playing time at some point this fall.

Biggest Question Heading into August

Who wins the starting RB job?  Right now, it appears to be Martinek’s to lose.  But when Brooks and Young get healthy, they will be in the mix.

Spring Game Hero

Rutgers quarterback Domenic Natale capped spring camp with a strong outing in the team’s annual Scarlet-White game on Saturday, completing 11 of 19 passes for 187 yards and a touchdown.  Joe Martinek rushed for 79 yards and three touchdowns on 19 carries. Senior Tim Brown had 5 catches for 116 yards.

Injury Report

QB Jabu Lovelace missed all of spring recovering from a pair of ankle surgeries.  RBs Kordell Young and Jourdan Brooks also missed time.  All should be good to go for fall camp.
