The regular season is over and now we get to sink our teeth into the magical Bowl Season. Many fantasy owners are participating in some kind of Bowl Fantasy game and may be in search of some “sneaky” plays to get a leg up on the competition. Below are some examples of players who could really surprise and exceed expectations during the Bowl games of 2011.
QUARTERBACKS
Dan Persa QB Northwestern vs. Texas A&M (Meineke Car Care):
Persa struggled through injury this season and did not have the type of campaign many had envisioned. He could go out with a bang against Texas A&M and their pathetic pass defense that ranked 113
th in the country this season. The Aggies are a mess and may put forth a very uninspired performance. Persa could shred this defense to the tune of at least 300 yards passing and two or three scores. Expect a big effort from this veteran signal caller.
Riley Nelson QB BYU vs. Tulsa (Bell Helicopter Armed Forces Bowl):
Nelson took over the starting job from the much-ballyhooed Jake Heaps early in the season and never relinquished it. He should be in line for a huge effort versus a wretched Tulsa pass defense that ranked 118
th in the nation. Look for Riley and the entire BYU offense to have their way with Tulsa and put up a bunch of yardage and points on the board.
Keith Price QB Washington vs. Baylor (Valero Alamo Bowl):
Price had a better than expected fantasy season, throwing 29 touchdowns in 12 games. He could put up some gaudy numbers as the Huskies try to stay with the potent offense that Baylor possesses. Also helping the cause for Price is the ineptitude of the Baylor defense that allowed 32 passing touchdowns on the season. Price will likely have to throw the ball often to keep Washington competitive, so he should have plenty of chances to earn fantasy points.
RUNNING BACKS
Vick Ballard RB Mississippi State vs. Wake Forest (Music City Bowl):
Ballard did go over 1000 yards rushing on the season, but was really a fantasy disappointment for most of the year. His fortune could turn around nicely against Wake Forest and their 70
th ranked rush defense. The Bulldogs will likely lean on Ballard and try to pound Wake Forest into submission. Look for Ballard to go over the 100-yard mark and add at least one score on the ground.
Ralph Bolden RB Purdue vs. Western Michigan (Little Caesars Bowl):
Bolden is not setting the world on fire by any means, but he has scored in the last three games and has a juicy match up in the Little Caesars Bowl. The Western Michigan defense has more holes in it than Swiss cheese and should provide ample opportunity for Bolden to shine. Fantasy owners can expect to see at least 100 total yards and a score out of Bolden in this contest, with the possibility of much more.
Tracy Lampley RB Southern Miss vs. Nevada (Sheraton Hawaii Bowl):
Lampley is coming off a monster performance against Houston in which he totaled 196 yards and two scores. He is a tremendous receiving threat, with 43 receptions on the season. This guy just seems to make plays and could do just that against a shaky Nevada defense. This game could be very high scoring, and Lampley could have a big part in all the fun.
Matt Brown RB Temple vs. Wyoming (Gildan New Mexico Bowl):
Brown has been a great compliment and fill in for Bernard Pierce this season, and has five games with over 100 yards rushing. He could see a bunch of carries against a weak Wyoming rush defense that ranked 115
th in the country. This game could be a blow out with Brown getting mop up duty and some garbage yards and scores.
WIDE RECEIVERS
Terrance Williams WR Baylor vs. Washington (Valero Alamo Bowl):
Williams has scored at least one touchdown in each of the last seven games and has established himself as the #2 option in the high-powered Baylor passing game. The Washington pass defense is abysmal and gives up almost 284 yards per game. Williams looks to be a good bet to find the end zone for the eighth straight game and top the 100-yard plateau in the process.
Jordan Matthews WR Vanderbilt vs. Cincinnati (AutoZone Liberty Bowl):
Matthews really came out of nowhere to post a quality fantasy season in 2011. He is averaging 121 yards receiving over the past five games and has four touchdowns over that same span. The Vanderbilt passing game could be humming against a rancid Cincinnati pass defense that comes in ranked 105
th in the nation. Look for Matthews to find pay dirt again and likely go over for at least 100 yards receiving.
Cody Hoffman WR BYU vs. Tulsa (Bell Helicopter Armed Forces Bowl):
This big sophomore has developed into the top receiving option for BYU and certainly has the attention of Riley Nelson. With Nelson likely to have a big day against Tulsa, it makes sense that Hoffman could be just as big. The Tulsa defense will likely be no match for Hoffman, and he could find his way on the receiving end of a couple of long pass plays.
TIGHT END
Drake Dunsmore TE Northwestern vs. Texas A&M (Meineke Car Care Bowl):
Dunsmore has had a quiet senior season, but is worth a look against the miserable defense of Texas A&M. The Northwestern passing attack could be in full swing and Dunsmore just might find himself running free more than usual.
