Fantasy Player to Watch: This one is a fantasy stinker. You might get some mileage from Eric Kettani who had 175 yards when these two met earlier this year. If you’re feeling lucky, you could roll the dice with Shun White and hope he breaks a big one. The Demon Deacons have very little to offer.
Vegas Says: Wake -3
The Geek’s Prediction: Wake Forest to win and cover (barely), 21-17.
Outcome:
Fantasy Player to Watch: CSU offers a couple strong fantasy options in RB Gartrell Johnson and WR Dion Morton.
Vegas Says: Colorado State +3
The Geek’s Prediction: We aren’t very confident in this one. This game is a toss up. Let’s call it CSU 31-27.
Outcome:
Fantasy Player to Watch: USF’s Matt Grothe. He’s been relatively quiet this season. Look for him to have a nice outing in what amounts to a home game for the Bulls.
Vegas Says: USF -11.5
The Geek’s Prediction: South Florida in a snoozer, 31-14.
Outcome:
Fantasy Player to Watch: BYU WR Austin Collie. In most fantasy scoring systems, Collie was ranked as the #2 overall WR in the land. There is no reason why he shouldn’t continue his stellar play in Vegas.
Vegas Says: BYU +3
The Geek’s Prediction: This is a tough call, but we think the Cougs will prevail in chilly Las Vegas. BYU 36, Arizona 31.
Outcome:
Fantasy Players to Watch: The USM trio of QB Austin Davis, RB Damion Fletcher and WR DeAndre Brown. Can they do damage against a stout Troy defense?
Vegas Says: Troy -4.5
The Geek’s Prediction: Troy’s defense will be the difference in a hard fought 27-20 win.
Outcome:
Fantasy Player to Watch: Dare I say the TCU defense? The Horned Frogs have been a top flight fantasy defensive unit this year. Can they shut down the Boise State attack….?
Vegas Says: TCU -2.5
The Geek’s Prediction: ...Yes they can! TCU 23-14.
Outcome:
Fantasy Player to Watch: Irish WR Golden Tate should get close to 100 yards receiving and find the endzone.
Vegas Says: ND +1.5
The Geek’s Prediction: Notre Dame has to win this game, don’t they? Charlie was given a second chance and will take this game very seriously. Yeah, it’s a home game for the Rainbow Warriors….but it’s the freaking Rainbow Warriors! And not the June Jones & Colt Brennan version, either. ND will put and end to their pathetic bowl winless streak (that dates back to pre-internet days) and wins this one 31-20.
Outcome:
Fantasy Player to Watch: Has to be Dan LeFevour. He came on strong late in the season and should be pumped to play in what is essentially a home game for the Chips. We think he’ll go off for 40 fantasy points.
Vegas Says: CMU -6
The Geek’s Prediction: A fun to watch shootout with the Chips outscoring FAU 45-31.
Outcome:
Fantasy Player to Watch: This is the final game in the storybook West Virginia career for Pat White. He faces a stiff challenge in Charlotte against the Tar Heels.
Vegas Says: WVU -1.5
The Geek’s Prediction: This is an even matchup. Our hunch is Pat White will go out a winner. WVU 23-20.
Outcome:
Fantasy Player to Watch: FSU kicker Graham Gano. Gano is in a prime situation for a kicker. He’s on an offense that is just good enough to move the ball, but has trouble punching it into the endzone. Also, Mr. Gano has good range - he’s hit a number of field goals from over 50 yards.
Vegas Says: FSU -5.5
The Geek’s Prediction: We like the Seminoles to win, but not cover. FSU 26-23.
Outcome:
Fantasy Player to Watch: Cal RB Jahvid Best. Mr. Best ran for 311 yards in his last outing. While he won’t duplicate those insane stats, he will have a good game.
Vegas Says: Cal -8
The Geek’s Prediction: Cal in a romp out in San Francisco, 33-17.
Outcome:
Fantasy Player to Watch: The Tech RB duo of Daniel Porter and Patrick Jackson. Porter has 1,200 yards from scrimmage and 9 TD’s on the year, while backup Jackson has contributed with 800 yards and 11 TD’s.
Vegas Says: La Tech +1.5
The Geek’s Prediction: We like La Tech to win this one in their home state. Call it 27-17.
Outcome:
Fantasy Players to Watch: We like three guys in this game: the Rutgers’ QB-WR combo of Mike Teel and Kenny Britt, and the Wolfpack’s QB Russell Wilson. Teel and Britt have been on fire lately and we don’t see why this trend should not continue. Wilson is a guy to scout for 2009. He could be playing from behind in this one so don’t be surprised if he puts up a nice statline.
Vegas Says: Rutgers -7
The Geek’s Prediction: The Scarlet Knights finish their season on a major roll by defeating the Pack 38-24.
Outcome:
Fantasy Players to Watch: The Mizzou quartet of Daniel-Washington-Maclin-Coffman. All should put up great stats in this one. On the Northwestern end, don’t be surprised if QB C.J. Bacher racks up some decent stats slingin’ it around in come-from-behind mode.
Vegas Says: Mizzou -12.5
The Geek’s Prediction: Another fun match up that should provide plenty of fireworks. Mizzou will hang on to cover the spread, 45-28.
Outcome:
Fantasy Player to Watch: Nevada QB Colin Kaepernick. On the season, he rushed for 1,115 yards and 16 TD’s, and passed for 2,479 yards with a 19-5 TD-to-INT ration. Can he continue his success against a decent ACC foe?
Vegas Says: Nevada -2
The Geek’s Prediction: This one is hard to read. It comes down to this: how fired up is Maryland going to be for this one? They are traveling a long way to a less-than-desirable destination to face a less-than-desirable opponent. Unless you count playing Nevada in Boise in December desirable. Advantage Nevada. Kaepernick leads them to a 34-27 win.
Outcome:
Fantasy Players to Watch: Zac Robinson. Kendall Hunter. Dez Bryant. Jeremiah Masoli. Jeremiah Johnson. LaGarrette Blount. All will produce in this one.
Vegas Says: Oregon +3.5
The Geek’s Prediction: As usual, the Holiday Bowl provides an intriguing match up pitting good offenses. We have a hunch that Jeremiah Masoli will surprise the Cowboys defense and pull out enough big plays to escape with a win, 34-30.
Outcome:
Fantasy Player to Watch: EVERYONE! Rice boasts the best fantasy QB in the land in Chase Clement, the best fantasy TE in the land (by a mile) in James Casey, and a top 3 fantasy WR in Jarett Dillard. On the other side of the ball, Western isn’t too shabby either. QB Tim Hiller and WR Jarmarko Simmons are fantasy studs, while RB Brandon West, WR Juan Nunez, WR Schneider Julien and TE Branden Lebetter are all solid options as well.
Vegas Says: Rice -2.5
The Geek’s Prediction: The game of the fantasy bowl season! It’s a dream match up of explosive offenses - against terrible defenses! The travesty here is that this game is on at the same time as the Holiday Bowl. That’s POOR SCHEDULING! BOOOOO! We think Rice will pull it out mainly because of their home field advantage. Rice wins 48-41.
Outcome:
Fantasy Player to Watch: Houston QB Case Keenum was the #2 ranked QB in most fantasy scoring systems this season. He racked up 38 points when these two squads met earlier this year (playing in hurricane conditions). He should produce again this time around in what should be a gentler weather environment.
Vegas Says: Houston -3.5
The Geek’s Prediction: Houston 42-28 sounds about right.
Outcome:
Fantasy Player to Watch: Pitt’s LeSean McCoy is a top 3 fantasy running back and he should get the ball early and often in this one.
Vegas Says: Pitt +3
The Geek’s Prediction: This is another match up that is too close to call. We keep flip-flopping back and forth. Yesterday we liked the Beavers, today it’s the Panthers. Pitt 27-21.
Outcome:
Fantasy Player to Watch: The BC defense. After Vandy’s 5-0 start, they have gone 1-6 scoring more than 14 points only ONE TIME. The BC defense should be able to keep the Dores offense under 14 points once again.
Vegas Says: BC -3.5
The Geek’s Prediction: Boston College 23-13.
Outcome:
Fantasy Player to Watch: Kansas WR Dezmon Briscoe. The star Jayhawk wideout concluded his season with 78 catches for over 1,200 yards and a dozen TD’s. He should be able to add to his total against a suspect Gopher defense.
Vegas Says: Kansas -9
The Geek’s Prediction: We actually give the Gophers a chance of hanging around in this one. In the end, KU will pull it out and cover the spread, 38-27.
Outcome:
Fantasy Player to Watch: Tech RB Jonathan Dwyer has rushed for 1,328 yards and 12 TD’s. He might find the running to be tough in the early going, but he always seems to break one big one. We expect 100 yards and a TD.
Vegas Says: Tech -4
The Geek’s Prediction: LSU has not impressed at all this year. Georgia Tech has. We like the Rambling Wreck by the score of 24-17.
Outcome:
Fantasy Player to Watch: Hawkeye RB Shonn Greene. Teams know how to scheme against Iowa (stack the box against Greene), but nobody has been able to stop the big, burly ball carrier. Mr. Greene is a lock for 100 and a TD in every game he plays.
Vegas Says: Iowa -3
The Geek’s Prediction: This is the only game this bowl season where a Big Ten team is favored to win. We like Iowa to win a close ballgame, 24-20.
Outcome:
Fantasy Players to Watch: The Battle of RB’s: UGA’s Knowshon Moreno vs. MSU’s Javon Ringer. Should be fun to watch these two go at it.
Vegas Says: Georgia -7.5
The Geek’s Prediction: We like Georgia to win the game, 34-21.
Outcome:
Fantasy Player to Watch: Husker QB Joe Ganz was lost in the B12 QB shuffle this year, but he had a very good year. The passing stats: 3,332 yards and 23 TD’s. The rushing stats: 257 yards and 5 TD’s.
Vegas Says: Nebraska +2.5
The Geek’s Prediction: The Huskers will finish the year strong with a 30-24 win over Clemson.
Outcome:
Fantasy Player to Watch: The USC defense. The Trojans have been suffocating their opponents this year giving up only 10 TD’s on the season. When preparing for tough defenses, JoePa usually gets conservative and tries to win 10-7. This will play right into the hands of Pete Carroll.
Vegas Says: USC -9
The Geek’s Prediction: Penn State will give USC all they can handle, but the Trojans will be up to the task. Barring a bunch of turnovers, USC will win this game. The only question is the 9 point line. We’ll go 23-13 USC.
Outcome:
Fantasy Player to Watch: Cincy WR Mardy Gilyard has put up very good stats this year: 73 - 1,110 - 10. In a game that could be low scoring, Mardy is your best fantasy option.
Vegas Says: Virginia Tech +2.5
The Geek’s Prediction: Cincinnati and Virginia Tech? In the Orange Bowl? What a yawner. We like the Hokies to put the clamps down on the Bearcats, 20-17.
Outcome:
Fantasy Player to Watch: Everyone knows about Harrell and Crabtree by now. They should both be healthy and ready to go. But keep an eye on Jevan Snead. The Ole Miss QB has thrown 13 TD’s in his last 5 games. He should be tossing the rock often to try and keep up with the vaunted Texas Tech offense. Snead could be a nice sleeper play this bowl season.
Vegas Says: Texas Tech -4.5
The Geek’s Prediction: Ole Miss is the trendy “upset pick” of the bowl season as the belief is the Red Raiders aren’t happy with getting an inferior match up. Screw the trend. Texas Tech wins 45-30.
Outcome:
Fantasy Player to Watch: This game has very little fantasy firepower - or intrigue of any kind (unless you are a UK or ECU fan).
Vegas Says: ECU -3
The Geek’s Prediction: We flipped a coin and it came up East Carolina. We rolled a 20-sided Dungeons and Dragons die and it came up 20-14. So there you go, ECU will win 20-14.
Outcome:
Fantasy Player to Watch: Tide RB Glen Coffee rushed for over 1,300 yards and 10 TD’s this year. He should get plenty of carries as Saban looks to pound the ball right down the throat of the Utes.
Vegas Says: Alabama -10
The Geek’s Prediction: Bama doesn’t completely blow out many teams. They dominate the games, but the score is always closer then the game actually was on the field. So if you’re going to bet this game you will likely be sweating it out until the end. We are going to say the Tide win 27-13.
Outcome:
Fantasy Player to Watch: Another battle of great college RB’s: Buffalo’s James Starks vs. UConn’s Donald Brown. Brown quietly led the nation in rushing and finished the regular season with 1,947 total yards and 17 TD’s. Starks wasn’t far behind in fantasy production with 1,648 total yards and 16 TD’s.
Vegas Says: Buffalo +4.5
The Geek’s Prediction: Buffalo is the Cinderella team of this bowl season and could pull off the upset. We will be rooting for them. However, at the end of the day we think Turner Gill’s boys will fall a little bit short. UConn 38-21.
Outcome:
Fantasy Player to Watch: Texas QB Colt McCoy. The Longhorn signal caller has yet to face a really good defense this year. And for all the bashing Ohio State has received, they do have a very strong defense. It will be interesting to see how Colt performs here.
Vegas Says: Ohio State +8.5
The Geek’s Prediction: This game pits two very motivated teams. Texas is out to prove they should’ve been in the title game. Colt McCoy is out to prove he should’ve won the Heisman. After stumbling in the last two national title games and against USC this season, Ohio State is out to prove they can win a big one. Texas will win the game, but it will be close. Texas 27-20.
Outcome:
Fantasy Player to Watch: Ball State RB MiQuale Lewis. The Tulsa defense leaves much to be desired. Lewis is our top rated RB of the bowl season and should shred TU for 150+ yards and multiple TDs.
Vegas Says: Tulsa +3
The Geek’s Prediction: Ball State has a lot going on right now. They just missed out on an undefeated season. Their coach left for San Diego State (sentiment is BSU didn’t step up to the plate financially to keep him). Their star QB is considering leaving early for the NFL. Too many distractions. We’re leaning towards Tulsa winning this one. Something like 42-34.
Outcome:
Fantasy Player to Watch: Gator QB Tim Tebow can cement himself as one of the greatest QB’s in college football history if he can pull off a victory here. He should feast on the Sooners defense, especially given Percy Harvin is back in the fold. We think he will have a great game.
Vegas Says: Florida -3
The Geek’s Prediction: Florida’s defense will hold the Sooners in check. The Gators will get a few nice special teams returns and win the field position battle. Bradford will perform admirably, but Tebow will steal the show. Florida 36-30.
Outcome:
