ARIZONA

News: Coach Mike Stoops hopes to have a resolution to his QB battle by the end of the week.  Nick Foles and Matt Scott are battling it out.
CFG Analysis:  The Arizona QB position is only relevant in Pac-10 heavy leagues.

BOSTON COLLEGE

News: 25 year-old QB David Shinskie, the leading candidate or the QB job, broke his rib and is listed as doubtful for practice today.
CFG Analysis: The BC QB situation is one to avoid.

BUFFALO

News: Star RB James Starks is out for the season with a torn labrum.
CFG Analysis: This is crushing news to many fantasy owners.  Our advice is to soften the blow by grabbing Brandon Thermilus, who now becomes the likely number one guy for the Bulls.

BYU

News: BYU offensive lineman Houston Reynolds has torn the ACL in his right knee. Reynolds injured his knee during practice Friday and an MRI showed the tear. BYU was still evaluating the injury Friday and wasn’t sure whether Reynolds will need surgery or whether he could return this season.
CFG Analysis: BYU has been hit hard by both graduation and by injuries.  Unless some very inexperienced replacements step up and produce, Max Hall could be running for his life this fall.

News: BYU running back Manase Tonga returned to the team after missing the 2008 team with academic issues.
CFG Analysis: Tonga poses a threat to Harvey Unga owners as he is a goal line threat.

CAL

News: Kevin Riley will be the Bears starting QB in their opener against Maryland.
CFG Analysis: Riley is worth consideration in Pac10-heavy leagues.

FLORIDA

News: Tim Tebow is back at practice after missing a little bit of time with a sore lower back.
CFG Analysis:  Nothing to worry about here.

GEORGIA

News: Coach Mark Richt said that Richard Samuel is “a solid number one” on the Bulldogs’ depth chart at tailback.
CFG Analysis: As we have been preaching since the opening of spring camp, steer clear of Georgia running backs this year.  There are many capable possibilities, and we foresee some semblance of RBBC throughout the season.

MICHIGAN

News: Head coach Rich Rodriguez made comments at Big Ten media day that all three of this QBs (Tate Forcier, Denard Robinson, and Nick Sheridan) will be used in the season opener against Western Michigan.
CFG Analysis: The fact that the “speed-challenged” Sheridan is still in the mix shows that both Forcier and Robinson are not completing passes as much as Rodriguez would like. This smells like a bad situation for fantasy owners in 2009.

MICHIGAN STATE

News: True freshman Larry Caper led the running backs with 14 carries for 68 yards and a touchdown. Both Caper and classmate Edwin Baker (32 yards) were featured in this scrimmage, while Caulton Ray again finished among the leading ball carriers with 37 rush yards.
CFG Analysis: Caper and Baker have both shown flashes of brilliance thus far in camp.  It appears Caper has the early edge in this battle.

MINNESOTA

News: Duane Bennett continues to get first team reps.  In yesterday’s scrimmage, he toted the rock times for 65 yards.
CFG Analysis: Bennett appears to be recovered from his knee injury.  He is worth a gamble in the later rounds of your draft.

MISSOURI

News: Missouri’s second scrimmage didn’t provide much encouragement for Coach Gary Pinkel as the Tigers continue preseason practice.  In fact, the Tigers might have taken a big step backwards as the Tigers prepare for their Sept. 5 opener in St. Louis against Illinois. “I thought it was kind of sloppy,” Pinkel told reporters after Thursday’s practice. “The (first-string) one offense was lethargic out there, made a lot of mistakes. And when you have penalties, you have sacks.
CFG Analysis: Missouri lost a ton of talent from last year and appear to be going through some growing pains at the moment.  We expect Blaine Gabbert, Derrick Washington and company to improve as the season goes on.

NEBRASKA

News: Nebraska Cornhuskers coach Bo Pelini announced Saturday that running back Quentin Castille has been dismissed from the program. Pelini said Castille violated unspecified team rules.
CFG Analysis: This opens the door for Roy Helu Jr. to become the feature back.  Draft accordingly.

NOTRE DAME

News: Nick Tausch has won the placekicking duties for Notre Dame.
CFG Analysis: Tausch is someone to monitor on the waiver wire this fall.

OKLAHOMA

News: DeMarco Murray, the 1,000-yard rusher trying to rebound from two hamstring injuries, was pronounced “100 percent” by Oklahoma running backs coach Cale Gundy Thursday night. That does not mean, however, the Sooners are ready to turn Murray loose.  “No live stuff yet,” Gundy said, meaning Murray has not participated in any of OU’s preseason scrimmages or 11-on-11 drills. “We’ll wait till next week probably.”
CFG Analysis: Murray has been bothered by nagging injuries the past few years.  When you invest a draft pick in DeMarco, this is the baggage that comes along with him.

OREGON STATE

News: On second thought, maybe Oregon State receiver Darrell Catchings doesn’t have a broken bone in his wrist and won’t miss the season.  In fact, maybe he will return as early as Sept. 12, which would mean missing only the opener against Portland State.
CFG Analysis: There sure have been a lot of stories on this guy this off-season.  Steer clear of him on draft day and consider him on the waiver wire if he is healthy and productive.
News: QB Lyle Moevao is making progress and could find himself back in the competition for the starting QB job sooner than originally thought.
CFG Analysis: Sean Canfield will get the start in the opener.  Depending on how he performs will largely determine whether Moevao will get a shot to win back his job.

PITTSBURGH

News: Pitt redshirt sophomore running back Shariff Harris was suspended from the team for two weeks for disciplinary reasons. Harris was battling with three other players for a spot in the tailback rotation.
CFG Analysis: This could further open the door for freshmen Dion Lewis and Ray Graham to secure a prominent role in the offense as Pitt tries to replace LeSean McCoy.

RUTGERS

News: Joe Martinek rushed for 76 yards and two scores on 10 carries in a recent scrimmage.
CFG Analysis: Martinek is looking good in camp with Kordell Young out with injury.

SOUTHERN MISSISSIPPI

News: Southern Miss running back Damion Fletcher practiced on Saturday to test out his injured hamstring.  He said he is about 80 percent healthy.
CFG Analysis: The question here is how the coaching staff handles their stars in game one against Alcorn State.  Given the level of competition, we wouldn’t be surprised to see Fletcher and teammate DeAndre Brown play sparingly in the opener.

TENNESSEE

News: Jonathan Crompton was named starting QB.
CFG Analysis: This is only newsworthy in SEC-heavy fantasy leagues.
News: WR Gerald Jones suffered a high ankle sprain while scrimmaging Saturday, and he could be out four to six weeks.
CFG Analysis: This should only impact SEC-heavy leagues.  We hope, for your sake.

TEXAS

News: Running backs Fozzy Whitaker and Vondrell McGee continue to share reps with the first team. Cody Johnson has split time between tailback and fullback. Tre Newton is also vying for playing time.
CFG Analysis: This situation has RBBC written all over it.

TEXAS A&M

News: ESPN.com’t Tim Griffin reports that Cyrus Gray has bulked up this off-season and has been one of the most pleasant surprises of Texas A&M camp this far.  He is entrenched in a battle with heralded freshman Christine Michael, who has shown flashes of brilliance.
CFG Analysis: We like the upside of Michael here, and feel is he worth consideration in the late rounds of deep BCS-only leagues.
News: Jerrod Johnson was named starting QB, and Ryan Tannehill is reportedly going to stay at QB and not move back to wide receiver.  “Ryan’s going to be a heck of a quarterback here,” Sherman said. “Are there going to be some situations where he’ll be on the field? Possibly. But right now, we’re still focusing on the quarterback aspect of it.”
CFG Analysis: The Johnson news is not surprising in the least.  But the Tannehill news is.  This just doesn’t make sense.  You’d think the Aggies would want their best players on the field, and not holding a clipboard.  We still think this is to be continued…

TULANE

News: More than two dozen Tulane football players are back at practice after coming down with mild flu-like symptoms last week.
CFG Analysis: There was no mention of Andre Anderson in this story, leading us to believe he has been cleared to practice. That is the hope, anyway.

TULSA

News:  There has been some speculation that G.J. Kinne is the leader for the Tulsa QB race.
CFG Analysis: The buzz is certainly favoring Kinne, but if history is any indication, this race isn’t over yet..

USC

News: USC coach Pete Carroll said quarterback Aaron Corp needs to return to full practice by Tuesday in order to be considered for the starting spot for this season’s opener vs. San Jose State.
CFG Analysis: We imagine that Corp will be out there on Tuesday to fight for his job.

News: Matt Barkley struggled in the weekend’s scrimmage, going 7-13 for 56 yards.
CFG Analysis: If Corp is back on the practice field come Tuesday, then Barkley better step up his game.

WISCONSIN

News: Junior Zach Brown moved ahead of sophomore John Clay in the rotation at practice last week and it doesn’t look like it’s going to change anytime soon. When asked about the possibility that Brown could start the opener against Northern Illinois in two weeks, running backs coach John Settle said, “It’s real. He took it over about midway through last week and he hasn’t done anything to relinquish that. If we played tomorrow, he’d start the ball game.”
CFG Analysis: We get the feeling that this one isn’t over yet, but it certainly isn’t good news for owners who invested a high pick in Clay.
