News: Tight end Rob Gronkowski was back at practice, but he was limited to riding a stationary bike. There is no word as to how serious the back injury is for Gronkowski.
CFG Analysis: We will have the latest news for you as it breaks. As for now we recommend dropping Gronk down you draft board slightly as a precaution.
News: Quarterback Max Hall suffered a dislocation of the ring finger on his throwing hand in an 11-on-11 scrimmage, but had the digit popped back into place resumed practicing. While icing his right hand after practice, Hall said he will be fine. Through a BYU spokesperson, trainer Kevin Morris said the dislocation was a “routine thing” and that Hall is not expected to miss any practice time.
CFG Analysis: Doesn’t sound like anything that will cost Hall practice time.
News: Jahvid Best continues to miss practice time as he rests his injured toe.
CFG Analysis: No cause for concern. Cal will keep Best as fresh as possible for the season.
News: Kyle Parker has been named Clemson’s starting quarterback, but backup Willy Korn—the most experienced signal caller on the roster—is expected to play in every game this fall.
CFG Analysis: Parker is someone to consider in ACC-heavy fantasy leagues.
News: Wide receiver Randall Cobb has been held out of practice due to a lingering back injury.
CFG Analysis: There is no extent to the injury, so time will tell before we know how serious this injury may be.
News: Running back Graig Cooper is Miami’s newest injury concern. Cooper missed the Hurricanes’ practice Tuesday morning with an apparent lower right leg injury. He was wearing a protective boot. The severity was not immediately clear.
CFG Analysis: Coach Shannon has stated that this injury is “nothing serious”. Let’s hope that is the case.
News: Wide receiver Jared Perry has been demoted from the 1st team to the second team after battling a bout of the “dropsies.” Perry is the leading receiver from the 2008 team that is back for 2009.
CFG Analysis: This might just be a motivational tool. There is still debate as to who will lead the Tiger WRs between Danario Alexander and Perry. How Perry responds to the demotion will have a lot to do with who becomes the #1 target at WR.
News: Quarterback Zac Robinson returned to the practice field this week.
CFG Analysis: You can place Robinson’s injury concerns behind him now.
News: Running back LeGarrette Blount has been excused from the team for the next several days so he can return home to Florida to attend to undisclosed family matters.
CFG Analysis: Time will tell if this has any fantasy impact since there are no specifics to why Blount is heading home. We’ll keep you updated as details unfold.
News: Oregon State receiver Darrell Catchings will have surgery on a broken bone in his right hand and is out for the year.
CFG Analysis: Catchings was a low-level option in deep BCS-only leagues. True freshman Markus Wheaton, one of the stars thus far of preseason camp, will step into Catchings’ spot.
News: Although no formal announcement has been made, its looking like Shaun Canfield will be the starting quarterback for the season opener. According to coach Mike Riley, Canfield has completed nearly 70 percent of his throws during fall camp, which “has never happened before, for anybody.”
CFG Analysis: This helps put concerns at rest. The WRs will know who will be tossing them the ball. Canfield should only be considered in deep BCS leagues.
News: ESPN.com reports that South Florida junior running back Mike Ford has been suspended for the Bulls’ first two games of the season for an undisclosed violation of team rules, the school announced Monday. No further details were given.
CFG Analysis: This helps Mo Plancher remain on top of the depth chart, but we recommend you just stay far away from the USF running back situation.
News: ESPN.com’s Graham Watson does a great job summarizing DeAndre Brown’s injury status.
CFG Analysis: The skinny for those of you too lazy to go to the link: DeAndre Brown is getting back to form but doesn’t appear to be 100% quite yet. He is hopeful to start contact drills the week before their opening game. His status for game one is uncertain.
News: Southern Miss running back Damion Fletcher went down during a scrimmage with a hamstring injury.
CFG Analysis: Doesn’t sound like anything too serious. We’ll keep an eye on this for further developments.
News: Orange head coach Doug Marrone officially named Greg Paulus as his starting quarterback on Monday night, even though Paulus has not played football in four years and has never played a collegiate snap.
CFG Analysis: Paulus is only worth consideration in Big East heavy leagues.
News: Freshman running back Bryce Brown, one of the top recruits in the class of 2009, left Tennessee practice Monday with a hip problem, GoVolsXtra.com reports. The seriousness of the injury is not yet known. The NCAA is also investigating Brown’s eligibility for the 2009 season. The concern by the NCAA is that Brown received money to attend summer football camps over the summer leading into his senior season in high school.
CFG Analysis: Brown figured to be in mix for carries from day one with Montario Hardesty. This news could put a crimp in those plans.
News: Texas A&M wide receiver Jeff Fuller was kept out of a scrimmage over the weekend due to a hamstring injury.
CFG Analysis: This injury is not thought to be serious, but it’s worth monitoring.
News: Baron Batch likely will return from an elbow injury much sooner than expected, according to a source close to the situation. Batch did some light work at practice Monday and is expected to be ready for full-contact drills by the middle of next week, the source said.
CFG Analysis: Good news for Batch owners. Let’s see how he looks in practice before assuming he’s 100%.
News: Freshman quarterback Matt Barkley struggled in the team’s most recent scrimmage. Barkley went 5-19 for 109 yards.
CFG Analysis: The team is still waiting on the results of the taken Monday on Aaron Corp’s crack fibula. If Corp is able to make it back to the practice field soon, Barkley will have to step up his game to win the starting job.
News: Utah quarterback Corbin Louks plans to transfer to Nevada. Louks said Tuesday that transferring will give him a better opportunity to continue playing quarterback.
CFG Analysis: Louks won’t be eligible to play in 2009, but could become a force for the Wolfpack down the line.
News: Running back Josh Oglesby is currently listed as the starting running back due to Darren Evan’s MCL injury.
CFG Analysis: Oglesby is the safe bet for the game 1 starter, but his fantasy ceiling is much lower than David Wilson and Ryan Williams. If you are going to draft a Hookie RB, view the pick as a long term investment for the second half of the season. We currently like Wilson.
News: Running back Zach Brown got a majority of the reps with the No. 1 offense Monday night. Bielema said Clay got the majority of the reps last week. “A lot of people have different opinions who’s going to be running the football, but Zach knows what he does (and) we know what he does well,” Bielema said. “So we gave him a lot of reps and he took advantage of them.”
CFG Analysis: Wisconsin is going to run the ball a lot, so this news isn’t exactly shocking. If Brown continues to take first team reps throughout the rest of August practice, then we will become more concerned.
