AKRON News: Running back Alex Allen was held out of Saturday’s scrimmage with a hip injury. CFG Analysis: Its hard to tell how serious the hip injury is from media reports. Allen should be considered a late round sleeper in fantasy drafts. Make sure you already have players on you bench at RB before news comes out to the severity of Allen’s injury

AKRON

News: Running back Alex Allen was held out of Saturday’s scrimmage with a hip injury.
CFG Analysis: Its hard to tell how serious the hip injury is from media reports. Allen should be considered a late round sleeper in fantasy drafts. Make sure you already have players on you bench at RB before news comes out to the severity of Allen’s injury.

ARIZONA

News: AZstarnet.com is reporting that starting tight end Rob Gronkowski has a back strain and is out indefinitely.  Coach Mike Stoops said Friday that Gronkowski, the team’s top returning offensive player, could miss a week or maybe longer.
CFG Analysis: Uh-oh.  First it was tests for a leg injury, now it’s a back strain.  The truth likely lies somewhere in between.  Upcoming college fantasy football drafters will have a decision to make on Gronk when they are on the clock.  Take the plunge?  Or play it safe.  The value of Jermaine Gresham and Dennis Pitta just went up a notch or two.

News: Back-up running back Greg Nwoko hammered out 62 yards on 11 carries in Saturday’s scrimmage.
CFG Analysis: Nwoko is a big RB that will back-up Nic Grigsby and Keola Antolin. His size and power have us believing he will serve as a short yardage/goal line back. Odds are he will steal TD’s away from Grigsby and Antolin.

BYU

News: Offensive lineman Jason Speredon, the projected starter at left guard, is out for the season with a shoulder injury.  The injury to Speredon, coupled with the hand injury left tackle Matt Reynolds suffered earlier this week, means the Cougars could go into the Oklahoma game with two redshirt freshmen starting on the left side of their offensive line
CFG Analysis: BYU came into camp with only one returning starter.  Now they’ve been hit with multiple injuries to those projected starters.  This is getting ridiculous.  Be very careful with your expectations for Max Hall and Harvey Unga as they will be operating behind a very green line.

FLORIDA STATE

News: Quarterback Christian Ponder was explosive during Saturday’s scrimmage. He went 15-20 for 287 yards and 4 TDs.
CFG Analysis: This is good news for the Seminole passing game. It appears that WRs are stepping up to help Ponder become a quality back-up on fantasy rosters.

GEORGIA

News: In Saturday’s scrimmage, running backs Carlton Thomas and Richard Samuel lead in the ground game. Samuel had the most carries, gaining 55 yards on 13 carries and 1 TD, while Thomas had the most yards gaining 90 yards on 6 carries.
CFG Analysis: We expect RBBC here. With Caleb King sitting out due to a sore hamstring, the door is being opened for Samuel and Thomas to gain the starting job. Time will tell on who winds up #1.

GEORGIA TECH

News: Georgia Tech backup quarterback Jaybo Shaw, who played in seven games and started one last year, broke his collarbone during a scrimmage Saturday morning, the school announced.
CFG Analysis: Shaw figured to be a backup this fall, so this injury should have little effect on most college fantasy football drafts.

HOUSTON

News: Our guy on campus tells us that James Cleveland is looking like the No. 3 wide receiver for Houston.  His physical presence is the perfect compliment to speedsters Tyron Carrier and Patrick Edwards.
CFG Analysis: Cleveland might be worth drat day consideration in deep leagues.

IOWA

News: From the Des Moines Register:  Jewel Hampton hit another snag in his bid to become the Iowa football team’s starting tailback.  The 5-foot-9, 210-pound sophomore from Indianapolis did not participate in Saturday’s open practice after aggravating a knee injury he originally sustained in July.  “He injured his leg two days ago and he’s going to be off it for a little bit,” coach Kirk Ferentz said. “We’ll just take it day by day.”
CFG Analysis: As we’ve been saying for months, steer clear of Hampton this year and, if you’re hellbent on drafting a Iowa RB, grab Jeff Brinson in the very late rounds of your draft.  Of course, if Hampton continues to have injury issues, Brinson might start going earlier on draft day.

MARSHALL

News: Two-year starting tailback Darius Marshall is suspended for the Sept. 5 matchup with Southern Illinois following an incident in May when he was charged with misdemeanor marijuana possession. Terrell Edwards will start in his place, backed by redshirt freshmen Martin Ward and Jordan Taylor.
CFG Analysis: We expected some sort of punishment for his transgressions.  One game sounds about right.  Marshall is still worth a look in the later rounds of your draft.

MEMPHIS

News: ESPN.com quoted Memphis offensive coordinator Clay Helton on running back Lance Smith:  “Lance provides us a tremendous amount and speed and talent from the Division I level and in this day and time it’s really hard to play with one back,” Helton said. “Two is always better than one. If you have two talented guys around you, you’re twice as better off. So, we’re really fortunate to have both Curtis and Lance in our backfield.”
CFG Analysis: We’ve been leery of Curtis Steele duplicating his solid 2008 numbers ever since Lance Smith (a Wisconsin transfer) came into the fold.  Tread carefully with Steele on draft day.

MINNESOTA

News: The Star Tribune reports that Minnesota running back Duane Bennett appears to be 100 percent healthy in fall camp.
CFG Analysis: The running back competition is still wide open according to Coach Brewster.  Bennett is in the mix with DeLeon Eskridge and Kevin Whaley.

MISSISSIPPI

News: Freshman Pat Patterson caught two touchdowns in yesterday’s scrimmage, a 50-yard strike and a 25-yarder.
CFG Analysis: Patterson is a great keeper option, and a consideration in the later rounds of deep leagues.

MISSOURI

News: Sophomore QB Blaine Gabbert was 17-of-21 passing for 219 yards and a touchdown. He also ran five times for 55 yards, scoring on an 18-yard keeper.
CFG Analysis: We like Gabbert as a strong sleeper candidate.  Don’t be afraid to pull the trigger on him come draft day as a reserve QB.

News: In Saturday’s scrimmage, running back De’Vion Moore lead the ground attack while wide receiver Danario Alexander lead the air attack. Moore scored 2 TDs while Alexander had 91 yards on 7 receptions and 1 TD.
CFG Analysis: Moore will most likely be the second string RB behind Derrick Washington. Alexander is in a heated battle with WR Jared Perry to see who will become QB Blaine Gabbert’s favorite target.

OREGON

News: Head coach Chip Kelly was raving about redshirt freshman running back LaMichael James after the team’s first scrimmage, ““LaMichael is a multi-talented kid with special talents. He had done nothing this fall that has surprised me. He is going to be a dynamic player in this league before he is finished.”
CFG Analysis: Although LeGarette Blount is the main RB, James will see plenty of time this year. He will be a great sleeper pick in deeper leagues.

OREGON STATE

News: Oregon State practiced in full pads for the first time this season Friday, and Jacquizz Rodgers’ surgically-repaired left shoulder held up fine in contact drills.
CFG Analysis: The concern with drafting Quizz in the first couple rounds is his durability, so this news comes as a relief.

News: Oregon Live reports that Oregon State wide receiver James Rodgers sat out at yesterday’s practice with soreness in his right knee.  “I’d rather let what ever is bothering James’ knee settle down than push it too fast,” Riley said.
CFG Analysis: This sounds like a precautionary measure.  We’ll continue to monitor this situation.

OKLAHOMA STATE

News: Tulsa World reported that quarterback Zac Robinson sat out of the team’s weekend scrimmage while still nursing a hamstring injury.
CFG Analysis: Head coach Mike Gundy expects Robinson back on the practice field Tuesday. If Robinson misses any more time it will become reason for concern.

RUTGERS

News: Joe Martinek has been looking good in practice and is in the mix for the starting running back job with Kordell Young (out with injury) and Jourdan Brooks.
CFG Analysis: We’ve been touting Martinek this season as one to watch.  He’s a “bull in a china shop” type who the coaching staff loves.  He could present great value in the late rounds if you’re willing to roll the dice a bit.

SOUTH FLORIDA

News: Senior Mo Plancher has pulled ahead in the competition for the tailback job at South Florida, Brett McMurphy reports in the Tampa Tribune.
CFG Analysis: We suggest you avoid this situation on draft day.

TEXAS

News: The Houston Chronical is reporting that the running back battle is heating up. Currently Vondrell McGee and Fozzy Whittaker are splitting reps with the first team. No word was made as to which team Cody Johnson is running with. Johnson will still be used a fullback in goal line situations. Freshman Chris Whaley has been nursing a hamstring injury.
CFG Analysis: It is interesting that no word was made as to what team Johnson is running with. We believe that there will most likely be shared carries with all of these backs. The fantasy leader of the group is Johnson due to his usage in the redzone to hammer out rushing TDs.

TEXAS A&M

News: Head coach Mike Sherman wants to be able to name a starting quarterback some time this week. No word on who is in the lead but reports coming out of Aggie camp say that Ryan Tannehill is making ground on Jerrod Johnson
CFG Analysis: The sooner this can be resolved, the better. Johnson is a viable option at QB in deep leagues, and Tannehill is a great sleeper at WR. If Texas A&M can get both of them on the field they will be much stronger than having one of them watch form the sidelines.

TEXAS TECH

News: The Avalance Journal reports that Batch was back at practice wearing a brace that covered most of his left arm, did some conditioning work such as riding a stationary bike. Later in the afternoon, he had the arm in a lighter sling as he watched the team period at the end of practice.
CFG Analysis: Leach is tight-lipped on injuries, so we can only make assumptions from what is seen from Batch.  The fact that he was back at practice in any capacity the day after his injury is good news in our view.

News: The Avalanche Journal reports that wide receiver Alex Torres, the spring’s surprise star, is currently atop the depth chart at the Z flanker position.  Lyle Leong is still at the X split end spot.
CFG Analysis: There are a lot of moving parts with the Tech receivers.  We still think Detron Lewis is the safest bet to be a consistent fantasy producer.  Whoever winds up locking down the coveted Z flacker position will certainly be someone to consider on draft day.

TULSA

News: Tulsa World is reporting that the quarterback battle appears to be down to two players: Jacob Bower & G.J. Kinne. It was head coach Todd Graham’s comments on freshman Shavodrick Beaver’s difficulty in picking up the offense as the reason to believe he is out of the running.
CFG Analysis: We won’t know who wins the job until the week of the first game. If you are going to risk drafting one of these quarterbacks, we suggest doing it in the middle round of the draft. It might be unlikely, but we suggest drafting both players back-to-back in order to “handcuff” the position.

UTAH

News: ESPN.com reports that Jordan Wynn is the new No. 1 quarterback at Utah.  “Jordan will run with the No. 1s and Cain with the twos,” Whittingham told media after practice.  “I want to emphasize we have not named a starter. It’s a chance to sort things out and get some continuity with the ones and twos and so forth. That is our starting point, nothing is etched in stone.”
CFG Analysis: This is surprising news, although the battle will continue through camp.

News: Utah quarterback Corbin Louks is considering a transfer after being demoted to third string on the depth chart. “I’ve got to see how things work out. I definitely wasn’t prepared for this. So we’ll see what happens,” Louks said before being asked if there’s a chance he’ll transfer and not play for the Utes this season. Louks has been taking reps at Safety since being bumped down to 3rd string at QB. Louks plans to talk with his family and the coaches while pondering his next move.
CFG Analysis: Louks was considered to be the frontrunner for the starting QB job heading into camp.  He sounds none to pleased with his demotion.  We’ll see how this shakes out.

USC

News: The Los Angeles Times reports that quarterback Aaron Corp will have x-rays done on Monday to get an update on his possible return to the practice field
CFG Analysis: The results of the x-ray could mean that Corp is ready to rejoin Matt Barkley in competing for the QB job, or Corp may have to miss more time from practice. We will keep you in the loop with the results and their impact.

VIRGINIA TECH

News: Freshman tailback David Wilson suffered a shoulder sprain early in the scrimmage and Tech’s sports medicine staff held him out of the remainder of the scrimmage. He may miss a couple of days of practice, but should be ready for next Saturday’s scrimmage. Josh Oglesby, who is No. 1 on the depth chart at tailback now that Evans is out, tweaks a hamstring in practice a couple of days ago. He saw limited action in the scrimmage because of that injury, which occurred the day after Evans went down.
CFG Analysis: The injuries don’t sound too serious.  But for those that snagged Wilson off the waiver wire, this news will temper your excitement level for a while.
