With many fantasy drafts just around the corner, let's examine one particular drafting strategy involving the all important quarterback position.
While it is undeniable that the QB is the highest scoring position in college fantasy football and consequently owners everywhere salivate at the thought of drafting one of these gunslingers in the early rounds of their individual drafts, there is another school of thought when it comes to nabbing your lead dog. This way of thinking involves being patient enough to wait on drafting your QB until rounds 6 or 7 and focusing on loading up your roster with highly ranked running backs and wide receivers in Rounds 1 through 5.
With this in mind, I have come up with two QB’s that would make a nice pairing for this season and can be had on draft day in those later rounds. These quarterbacks are BJ Daniels of South Florida who has a current ADP of 86 and Christian Ponder of Florida State who has an ADP of 110. After scrutinizing over both of these players schedules, it is apparent that this two-player rotation could be very productive in 2010.
Below is an example of how this could play out should you choose to employ this strategy.
Week 1- Ponder vs. Samford
Both players play easy opponents in the opener, but I’ll go with Ponder to play a little longer than Daniels.
Week 2- Ponder vs. Oklahoma
This is the worst week of the season for both QBs as they face stingy defenses in Oklahoma and Florida respectively. I’ll take Ponder against the Sooners by a slim margin.
Week 3- Ponder vs. BYU
This one is easy as Ponder could be in a shoot out with BYU and Daniels is on a bye this week.
Week 4- Daniels vs. Western Kentucky
Both have decent matchups, but we’ll go with Daniels against a Hill Toppers defense that ranked 81st against the pass in 09.
Week 5- Daniels vs. Florida Atlantic
While Ponder faces a surprisingly stingy Virgina defense; Daniels has the pleasure of facing the 80th ranked pass D of FAU.
Week 6- Daniels vs. Syracuse
I like the chances for Daniels to have a big game against a suspect Cuse defense just a bit more that Ponder facing a tougher Canes unit.
Week 7- Ponder vs. Boston College
I’ll take Ponder at home against a decent BC squad over Daniels traveling to a rowdy Morgantown.
Week 8- Daniels vs. Cincinnati
A no brainer here as Daniels should be involved a in fantasy dream game with the Bearcats and Ponder will be taking it easy on a bye week.
Week 9- Ponder vs. NC State
Ponder could have a monster game against a suspect Wolf pack defense and Daniels will be relaxing during his second bye week of the season.
Week 10- Daniels vs. Rutgers
Daniels against the Scarlet Knights seems like a much safer option that Ponder against a nasty Tar Heels defense.
Week 11- Daniels vs. Louisville
A trip to Louisville should mean a nice fantasy game for Daniels, while Ponder could find it tougher sledding against a stout Clemson D.
Week 12- Ponder vs. Maryland
A pretty easy choice here with Ponder facing a shaky Terrapins defense and Daniels going up against a stellar Pitt squad.
Week 13- Daniels vs. Miami
Neither guy has a great matchup as Ponder faces Florida and Daniels travels to Miami. I’d go with Daniels to produce better numbers against the Canes.
If you are risk averse as a drafter, this strategy of rotating two quarterbacks just might be right up your alley. I only looked at these two players, but obviously this can be used on many different signal callers this year. The risk/reward equation of this draft strategy is very high so be prepared for some bumps in the road, but don’t lose faith as it could lead you to the prize in the end.
