Todd's Analysis
My Draft Strategy:
With a number of mocks already under my belt, I decided to try a few new things in this one. My plan was to take kick things off with two running backs and follow it up with a pair of wideouts, then wait on quarterback until the 5th round or later. Alas, I could not resist Kinne in round three, which set me off course a bit.
My Favorite Pick:
I was happy to snag UNLV wideout Phillip Payne as a mild sleeper in the 12th round. He's a redzone monster who could flourish under the new coaching staff.
Having Second Thoughts:
The tight end crop is weak this year, but when Lance Kendricks was available at the 7-8 turn I decided to take the plunge. I'm not convinced this is the correct strategy as there are plenty of decent tight ends to be had in the late rounds, but I wanted to give it a whirl in this mock.
"The One That Got Away":
I was salivating at the notion of Sanu dropping to me at the end of the third round. He nearly did, before Canes4Life snatched him up at 3.08.
Best Value Picks:
1. 17th round - QB Austen Arnaud (Iowa State) by Futbol Fairys
2. 9th round - QB Christian Ponder (Florida State) by Joe-CFG
3. 6th round - QB Landry Jones (Oklahoma) by Steven Lassan
4. 12th round - RB Derrick Locke (Kentucky) by Socceroos
5. 14th round - RB Charles Clay (Tulsa) by Futbol Fairys
A Couple Headscratchers:
1. 12th round - RB Brandon Saine (Ohio State) by Sackers
I would advise avoiding the Buckeye RBs on draft day this year.
2. 1st round - QB Robert Griffin (Baylor) by Maniacs
Nobody loves RG3 more than I do, but the first round is a heavy investment for a player coming off a knee injury.
3. 7th round - QB Austin Dantin (Toledo) by Chapel Hill Glory
There were several quarterbacks available on the board I would've selected over Dantin.
Joe's Analysis
My Draft Strategy:
I have found that drafting two running backs to start the draft off seems to be one of the best plans unless an elite QB is available. After drafting my two RBs, I then decided to try something different and lock down the best two QBs I could get. Once I reached the 5th round I would load up on WR and draft purely for value regardless of my roster or trends in how others were drafting.
My Favorite Pick:
Picking up Missouri’s Wes Kemp as my WR3 in the 7th round was my favorite selection. I was able to team him up with Dwayne Harris of East Carolina and T.Y. Hilton of Florida International to give myself a decent starting three WRs despite waiting so long to draft them.
Second Thoughts:
I feel like drafting RB Derrick Washington in the 8th round might have been a tad high. I was debating him or QB Christian Ponder (who I got the next round). But I reached for my last RB starter to avoid waiting one round and facing a major drop off if Washington did get selected.
“The One That Got Away”:
Todd’s favorite selection is my player that got away. Just five picks before I was eying up to select WR Phillip Payne, Todd snags him up. If you’re going to wait on drafting WRs like I did you must have a list of players you can get for good value like Payne, and pick the right time to draft them.
Best Value Picks:
1. 12th Round – WR Phillip Payne (UNLV) by Todd DeVries - CFG
2. 9th Round – QB Christian Ponder (Florida State) by Joe Arpasi - CFG
3. 14th Round – TE Vance McDonald (Rice) by Steven Lassan - Athlon
4. 10th Round – QB Josh Nesbitt (Georgia Tech) by Todd DeVries - CFG
5. 10th Round – WR Detron Lewis (Texas Tech) by Joe Arpasi - CFG
A Couple Headscratchers:
1. 6th Round – RB Allen Bradford (USC) by Sackers
I’m just not sold on a USC running back living up to the production that 2009 Tennessee RB Montario Hardesty put up. Too much talent for just one guy to hoard the production.
2. 5th Round – RB Baron Batch (Texas Tech) by Kevin Mount – CFG
I just don’t envision Batch dominating the production like Kevin does. He’s recovering from a sports hernia and back-up Harrison Jeffers is bound to eat into Batch’s production.
3. 4th Round – QB Dayne Crist (Notre Dame) by Canes4Life
I feel like Crist needs to be considered a “boom or bust” type of sleeper, not a proven commodity. This was Canes4Life’s first QB selected. There were just way too many more proven guys to go after as your QB1 at this point in the draft.
Kevin's Analysis
My Draft Strategy: With the No. 1 pick I basically had to take Keenum by default. It’s never good to be too cute and screw things up. I usually like to come out of the first 5 rounds with a top QB, 2 RB’s, and 2 WR’s and that’s how it shook out for me in this mock.
My Favorite Pick: I was ecstatic to see Tandon Doss there for me with the last pick of the 6th round. He is their best play maker and could really flourish this season and be a top 10-15 WR in most leagues. Plus, I like the fact that he gets a few rushing attempts to go with his receiving.
Having Second Thoughts: I thought about going with DeAndre Brown or Mohamed Sanu at the 2-3 turn to pair with James Cleveland, but I didn’t want my RB’s to be so weak so I went with Devine instead.
“The One That Got Away”: I had two big fish that got away from me. I was really hoping to land Kendall Hunter with the last pick of round 2, but he went two picks before I could grab him. Then I really wanted Jake Locker as my No. 2 QB at the end of round 4, but alas Joe snagged him up a few picks earlier.
Best Value Picks
1. 7th Round- RB Frank Goodin (La Monroe) by Steven Lassan
2. 9th Round- QB Christian Ponder (Florida State) by Joe-CFG
3. 12th Round- TE Daniel Hardy (Idaho) by Futbol Fairys
4. 13th Round- RB Mikel LeShoure (Illinois) by Maniacs
5. 13th Round- WR Donovan Varner (Duke) by Sackers
A Couple Headscratchers:
1. 8th Round – WR Maurice Shaw (Idaho) by Kevin-CFG
I absolutely blew this one and was actually meaning to draft Daniel Hardy at TE; it’s been a rough couple of weeks.
2. 1st Round- QB Robert Griffin (Baylor) by Maniacs
I can’t see him being worth a 1st round pick this year coming off an injury. Plus, I think he could have been in the 3rd or 4th round.
3. 3rd Round- QB Ricky Dobbs (Navy) by Futbol Fairys
Just a little early for my tastes. With guys like Jake Locker and Landry Jones still on the board, it might have been prudent to wait.
