Injuries

Quarterbacks

image

Lyle Moevao (QB, Oregon State)

What’s the scoop? Moevao’s on the road to recovery from a shoulder injury and could be back in the QB mix at some point in September.

image

Max Hall (QB,  BYU)

What’s the scoop? Hall dislocated a finger on his throwing hand but didn’t miss any practice time.

image

Jaybo Shaw (QB, Georgia Tech)

What’s the scoop? Shaw broke his collarbone and is out 6-8 weeks.  He might take a redshirt.  He figured to be Josh Nesbitt’s backup this fall.

Running Backs

image

James Starks (RB, Buffalo)

What’s the scoop? Starks is out for the year after opting for season-ending shoulder surgery.

image

Andre Anderson (RB, Tulane)

What’s the scoop? Anderson missed some time last week, along with more than 20 other teammates, with flu-like symptoms.  It was reported that most of the players with flu symptoms returned to the practice field in the past few days, but there has been no confirmation if Andre was among those players.

image

Jahvid Best (RB, Cal)

What’s the scoop? Best sat out most of camp with a sore toe.  Looks like this was a precautionary measure as Best was back at practice this week.

image

Harvey Unga (RB, BYU)

What’s the scoop? Unga has been dealing with hamstring issues.  He has been held out of most contact drills in camp.  He is not expected to miss the opening game.

image

Damion Fletcher (RB, Southern Miss)

What’s the scoop? Fletcher has been hampered by a sore hamstring but was back at practice this week and got some reps.  His status for the opener is uncertain at this time.

image

Baron Batch (RB, Texas Tech)

What’s the scoop? Batch’s elbow injury wasn’t as serious as initially thought.  The question is whether the coaching staff will get him the typical number of touches in the opener, limit him, or decide to sit him altogether.  Conventional wisdom says that Batch will surely be ready to roll by week 3 against Texas.  The North Dakota and Rice games in weeks 1 and 2 remain a mystery.

image

Atiyyah Henderson (RB, San Diego State)

What’s the scoop? Henderson broke a bone in his back, and the timetable for his return to the practice field is unknown.  Brandon Sullivan moves into the No. 1 RB role.

image

Caleb King (RB, Georgia)

What’s the scoop? Caleb King sustained a hamstring injury during a scrimmage that has sidelined him for part of camp. Richard Samuel took advantage of the opportunity and has been named the number one starter.

image

DeMarco Murray (RB, Oklahoma)

What’s the scoop? Murray has been hampered by a bum hamstring but says he is 100 percent and will be ready for the opener.

image

Alex Allen (RB, Akron)

What’s the scoop? Allen is still bothered by a hip injury that caused him to miss most of the 2008 season.  Details are sketchy, but it’s safe to say that thoughts of Allen being a workhorse back have been tempered, especially with Ohio State DeVoe Torrence looking sharp in camp.

image

Jewel Hampton (RB, Iowa)

What’s the scoop? Hampton reaggravated a knee injury earlier this month and has missed most of camp.  As we’ve said for a couple months now, stay away from Hampton this fall.

image

Kordell Young (RB, Rutgers)

What’s the scoop? Young continues to have issues with his surgically repaired knee and has been limited in camp.  He hopes to be ready for the season opener, but one has to wonder if he will be in “football shape” by game one.  Joe Martinek has looked good in camp in Young’s absence.

Wide Receivers

image

DeAndre Brown (WR, Southern Miss)

What’s the scoop? Brown is looking more and more like his normal self with each passing day.  He has been running routes at full speed, but has yet to participate in a large amount of full-contact drills.  His status for the opener is a question mark, moreso because of the level of competition - USM is playing Alcorn State.

image

McKay Jacobson (WR, BYU)

What’s the scoop? Jacobson has been dealing with concussion-like symptoms after sustaining a hit in practice earlier this week.

image

James Rodgers (WR, Oregon State)

What’s the scoop? Wide receiver James Rodgers has been dinged up a few times this camp.  There is no one injury that causes concern, but his long term durability is still a little bit of a question.

image

Randall Cobb (Kentucky)

What’s the scoop? Cobb was sidelined for a while with a lingering back issue.  He went to a back specialist for some treatment.  Cobb returned to practice this week as is expected to play.

image

Scott Long (WR, Louisville)

What’s the scoop? Long is still on the mend from a knee injury.  He is not participating in contact drills but hope to be ready to go for the opener.

image

Aldrick Robinson (WR, SMU)

What’s the scoop? Robinson missed some practice time with a sore hamstring injury.  He was back at practice later this week.

image

Darrell Catchings (WR, Oregon State)

What’s the scoop? Catchings hurt his hand (conflicting reports on the exact injury) and will be out until probaby mid-September.

image

Chad Bumphis (WR, Mississippi State)

What’s the scoop? Bumphis has a foot injury that could keep him out of action for the opener.

image

Darius Darks (WR, Iowa State)

What’s the scoop? Darks has been hampered by a lingering hamstring injury.  He has been declared “out” for the opener, and has fallen on the depth chart.

image

Andre Debose (WR, Florida)

What’s the scoop? The incoming freshman has been limited in summer workouts with a bad hammy.  He is behind the learning curve and might not make the impact in the early going that was expected by many.

image

Toren Dixon (WR, Rice)

What’s the scoop? Dixon has been nursing a hamstring injury and has missed some practice time.

Tight Ends

image

Rob Gronkowski (TE, Arizona)

What’s the scoop? Gronk has beeen dealing with back issues this August.  He was expected to participate in practice late this week and hopes to play in the opener.  Stay tuned.

image

Wes Scourten (TE, Houston)

What’s the scoop? Scourten has a foot injury that’s kept him out of action for most of August camp.

image

Kyle Rudolph (TE, Notre Dame)

What’s the scoop? Rudolph has missed time with a hamstring injury.  Long-term status is unknown.
