Burning Question #15: Will DeAndre Brown be 100% this fall?

Southern Miss WR DeAndre Brown

One of the most unforgettable images of the 2008 bowl season was the horrific leg injury sustained by Southern Miss wide receiver DeAndre Brown. Brown fractured his left tibia in the first half of the New Orleans Bowl against Troy and was carted off the field.

Brown had been one of the most dominant fantasy freshman of the 2008 season.  Will the budding star be ready to roll this fall?

More on “Burning Question #15” after the jump…

What’s the scoop?

In 2007, DeAndre Brown was one of the most highly sought after high school players in the nation.  The Mississippi native choose Southern Miss over offers from football powerhouses such as Georgia, Florida and LSU.  At 6’6 and 230 pounds, DeAndre Brown is quite possibly the most physically gifted wide receiver in the nation.  NFL scouts are already drooling over his measurables and the comparisons to Calvin Johnson have begun.

The super-frosh burst onto the scene last fall racking up 67 catches for 1,117 yards and a dozen touchdowns.  The highlight of his season was an amazing 12 catch, 221 yard, four touchdown performance against Rice on October 18th.

His bowl game injury occurred on December 22nd.  He had surgery to repair the injury the following day.  The surgeon reported that he had a clean brake and that he should make a full recovery.  If there are no setbacks, his rehab should be complete by July.  There have been no reports of a setback thus far.

If your fantasy draft was today (03/03/09)....

There is a lot to like about DeAndre Brown.  He has an NFL-ready body.  He plays in a mid-major conference where he is a man among boys.  His quarterback, Austin Davis, is only going to get better.  When 100% healthy, DeAndre Brown is a Top 3 fantasy wide receiver.  But until we see him running routes in practice this summer, he must be considered a slight risk and probably drops down a notch or two.
