Random Bowl Musings

The Geek has a few things on his mind this bowl season.  He’ll share his thoughts in this space from the first bowl game through the national title game.

Here’s a cool overhead shot from the Rose Bowl.

image

Terrelle Pryor is a dynamite runner, but he’s a downright poor passer.  His Fiesta Bowl statline:  5-14 for 66 yards.  Coach Tress has some work to do in the off-season.

Congrats to Donald Brown for a fantastic season.  After his 261 yard International Bowl performance, Brown becomes the 14th player to eclipse the 2,000 rushing yard mark:

Player (Year) Carries - Yards - TD’s (YPC)

We put Barry Sanders’ amazing 1988 stats in bold.  His number dwarf the others on this list, especially considering his bowl game stats aren’t included!  Back then, they did not count bowl games towards stats.  If you add Barry’s Holiday Bowl performance (29-222-5), his final season stats were:  373 carries, 2,850 rushing yards, 42 TD’s, 7.64 YPC.  That’s 237.5 yards per game!  Simply amazing.

2009 “Way Too Early” - Fantasy WR & TE Rankings

Media, Articles, Weekly Geek, 2009 Preseason
Posted 1/5/09 by The Geek

image
As we compiled our 2009 wide receiver rankings, we couldn’t help but think how few truly elite players will return at the position.  One who is certain to be back in the fold next fall is Dez Bryant (photo, Icon SMI).  His statline of 87-1,480-19 (including the bowl game) made him the most explosive WR in 2008.  At the tight end position, NFL-bound James Casey leaves a big void at the top of our list.  Arizona’s Rob Gronkowski is our current top dog, but the Sooners’ Jermaine Gresham is close behind at #2.

2009 “Way Too Early” - Fantasy RB Rankings

Media, Articles, Weekly Geek, 2009 Preseason
Posted 1/4/09 by The Geek

imageWith the early departure of Shonne Green and Donald Brown to the NFL, Ball State’s MiQuale Lewis tops our 2009 “Way Too Early” RB rankings. Lewis rushed for 1,701 yards and 22 TD’s on the season (prior to the bowl game).  Whether star QB Nate Davis stays at Ball State or opts to go pro, Lewis will surely be the focal point of the Ball State offense next fall.  With head coach Brady Hoke jumping ship to San Diego State, offensive coordinator Stan Parrish has been elevated into the top spot and should continue to run the same attack that Lewis thrived in this year.

2009 “Way Too Early” - Fantasy QB Rankings

Media, Articles, Weekly Geek, 2009 Preseason
Posted 1/4/09 by The Geek

The 2009 college football season starts in less than 250 days!  Time to start prepping for that fantasy draft!  Okay, maybe not.  But it’s always fun to take a look ahead (or in this case, WAY AHEAD), so we present to you our “Way Too Early” 2009 fantasy QB rankings.

Houston gunslinger Case Keenum tops our QB board for 2009. Keenum (photo, Icon SMI) passed for 5,020 yards and 44 TD’s on the season, while also rushing for 225 yards and 7 TD’s.  And he was only a sophomore in 2008.  We expect him to put together another spectacular year in ‘09.

Who will be announcing the bowl games?

Media, Articles, Weekly Geek, Bowls
Posted 12/23/08 by The Geek

Here’s the rundown of who will be up in the booth for each bowl game.  Pat Summerall is being pulled out of retirement to do the Cotom Bowl?  Yikes.  Pam Ward gets assigned the worst bowl game of the season - and deservedly so.  Our favorite announcing teams will be doing the Holiday and Rose Bowls, enhancing what should already be great games.  Thanks to our friends over at http://www.awfulannouncing.com for pulling together this information.

Tuesday, December 23rd
Poinsettia Bowl: 11 Texas Christian v. 9 Boise State (ESPN, 8pm)
Rece Davis, Lou Holtz, Mark May, Todd Harris

Wednesday, December 24th
Hawaii Bowl: Hawaii v. Notre Dame (ESPN, 8pm)
Dave Pasch, Andre Ware

We received lots of feedback regarding the picture that accompanied our Confidence Level Picks article.  Geek Nation wanted to see the ZIG-ZAGGING Bo Jackson in some live Tecmo Bowl action.

Your wish is my command.  Above is a YouTube clip of the unstoppable digital force toying with the hapless Patriots.  Bo’s run takes up the entire first quarter of play!  And be sure to turn up the volume - the Tecmo Soundtrack is certainly worth downloading to your iPod.

Which conference has the toughest bowl schedule?

Media, Articles, Weekly Geek, Bowls
Posted 12/21/08 by The Geek

image
At the end of every bowl season, the ESPN talking heads love to heap praise on whatever conference has the best bowl record.  What they fail to mention is the quality of opponent for “said” conference.

We broke down the average computer ranking of the bowl opponents for each of the power conferences to see which, on paper, has the toughest row to hoe this bowl season.  Here is what we found...

Average computer ranking for each conference’s bowl opponents:
17.00 - SEC
17.80 - Pac-10
21.00 - Big Ten
26.57 - Big 12
38.00 - ACC
44.00 - Big East

So, what does this mean?  The SEC and Pac-10 have the toughest bowl games based on computer ranking.  The Big East and ACC have the easiest bowl schedules.  It’s just something to consider when evaluating a conference’s bowl success at the end of the day. More details after the jump...

imageWEEKLY GEEK INJURY ROUNDUP
There are many big names on the injury report for the bowl season.  Graham Harrell, Sam Bradford and Percy Harvin all should be good to go.  The injuries to watch are with DeMarco Murray, Tyrell Sutton, and Jacquizz Rodgers.  Murray has been ruled out of the BCS title game.  Sutton is a question mark.  Rodgers says he will play, but owners must be concerned about his shoulder.

See our current list of injuries after the jump.
